Edit: I've decided to re-name this thread, as I'm sure I'll have a number of other novice-level questions about car stuff...
Hi all,
I'm trying to fit a boost gauge to my car. There's a pipe going from the inlet to the fuel pump (it's a TD), which I presume is what I need to cut into to fit a T piece to the gauge. I took one end off to do a test fit before doing anything drastic with a knife.
The gauge fitting kit came with a T-piece, and three bits of rubber pipe. I can fit the bits of rubber pipe on the three ends of the T-piece, and the pipe to the gauge fits nicely inside one of the exposed ends.
The pipe from the mainifold seems to fit over one of these bits of rubber pipe from the kit, but I'm not sure if it's a good enough airtight fit. Am I doing it right? I thought I took a picture but can't find it. Will re-take it if it helps answer my question...
Also, the T piece has a narrow internal diameter, would this affect the airflow/pressure needed by the fuel pump? I'm guessing the fuel pump only needs a pressure reference, and there's no actual airflow, so it should be ok.
Thanks in advance!

What car is it? The usual way of doing it would just be to cut the original pipe and push the 2 halfs over 2 of the t-pieces connections, then just run a long new piece of hose from the 3rd fitting on the T to the gauge.
As you say the pump only needs a pressure reference and little to no flow, so the small diameter should be fine. It's the same with the gauge.

205 with an XUD7. The push fit of the existing pipe on the T-piece adapters didn't seem that good...

Also, what kind of pressure drop will I get across the small pipe to the boost gauge?

There won't be a pressure drop, just an imperceptibly small lag but nothing you'd be able to notice.

If you're worried about the push fit being loose just put some small fuel line clips or small tiewraps on.

Right so my next question. I was faffing about under the bonnet today, and was eyeing up the air intake hoses. The one from filter to turbo is disintegrating, so I want to replace it. I took one end of the pipe off the breather, and there's a lot of oily deposits in the main hose, apparently coming from the turbo. Is this bad? I know the oil breather pipe is there to catch oil, but what's it for? Does it help the engine, or is it just some environmental thing?? Also, the area around the brake vac pump is splattered in old oil. Is this coming from the top engine bearing?

All you ever wanted to know about breathers: www.106rallye.co.uk/members/dynofiend/breathersystems.pdfLooks like the oil leak could be coming from the camshaft seal, easy way to find out is to get the whole area clean with degreaser then run the engine for a bit or take it for a short drive, then you should be able to see exactly where it's coming from.

Thanks, think that link will answer any questions I will ever have about breathers.
Next question:
I've now got a working boost gauge fitted. When the engine is at idle or low RPM, the needle in the gauge rapidly vibrates between 0 and 3psi. Is this normal? What is it caused by?

Another question:
I may as well first describe the symptoms of what I'm trying to fix:
The steering feels terrible. The car pulls to the left (but it also seems to pull by varying amounts), the steering is not very precise, and (although I might be imagining it), it also seems to bumpsteer more than I'd expect. Also the amount of steering assist varies across the range from lock to lock in a way that just feels weird.
I've put the car up on axle stands and taken off the front wheels to have a look. I've tried giving the hub a good pull in various directions to see if there's any play, but not really sure what I'm looking for. If some suspension components were worn, would I expect to be able to feel the play? If I pull the hub up and down, there's probably 1mm or less of play. Is this ok??
I'm planning to change the bushes, and probably topmounts, at some point.

Ok so I've been thinking about this some more, hopefully someone will be able to tell me if I'm on the right track. As I understand it, a car with manual steering will return to driving in a straight line (assuming there's enough toe-in) if the wheel is let go. If the tracking isn't set up right, the wheel won't be straight, and could cause problems with unequal lock on each side, etc. I've just found this awesome video explaining power steering: uk.jalopnik.com/5861977/how-does-power-steering-workIf I understand correctly, it's more important that the tracking is correctly set on a car with power steering. If it's set wrong, so that the wheel isn't central when the car is driving straight, the power steering system will be applying steering pressure, and causing the car to pull to one side. Is this right??

It's the caster angle that defines the self centreing more than anything......to be honest, there's loads of things that could be causing your problem from very minor (a worn bush somewhere) to major (poorly repaired accident damage). If the vehicle pulls to one side on accelerating then springs back on releasing the power, check the bushes at the top of the struts...
