How about starting earlier? with the likes of Austin 7 specials etc ![](http://imageshack.us/a/img545/8030/7spec2.jpg) I'm farly sure this is where Champman began en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Mark_IIt seems to me that this was our form of "Hot Rod" at the time but is now largely overlooked in popular car culture. There is a short but quite interesting chapter at the beginning of the Ron Champion Locost book which has some period pictures of specials.

One day I will own one, taking retro to its logical conclusion! Although I will probably have to build it myself as I cant afford a period modified one and I doubt I would fit in 99% of them.

That really is inspiring! I love the apparent brutal simplicity, but look closer and you will see a large amount of very clever engineering to make it so spartan. My only gripe is the rear end looks a bit too ... i suppose "unfinished" is the word? Cant put my finger on it... Other than that its period perfect!
Don't see headlights, i wonder if its road legal?

![](http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh114/ttr7/Goodwood%20soft%20top%20sunday/CIMG8658.jpg) What carbs are these? Look a bit long in the body for them to be SU's, unless they are some wacky vintage numbers... Is that an A-Series?

If you want a modern kit get a Westfield, always been better and cheaper than than Caterham.
You're right early "specials" were our equivalent of hot rodding. Aesthetically they were both based on less weight = more speed, and just being a cheap way to go fast in general.

I very nearly bought that diesel Westfield when it came up on eBay a few years ago.

I had a tuned C20LET in mine, but it never saw the road unfortunately. I've seen some Locosts with 1.6 Pintos/CVH's in with Bedford Rascal seats - the cheapest of the cheap!

Let's not forget Robin Hood. Smaller investment of cash, but more investment of ingenuity required. And you have to admire their unconventional marketing strategies. Polished stainless finish, mid-engined variant, one-off Jag V12 version, collect your kit on a specified date, Make 'em cheap, sell 'em in numbers, complete kit with Rover 2.0Turbo engine........ ![](http://thumbsnap.com/s/9gmHRjkn.jpg)

Gillet Vertigo I think it would have to be on my list of Lottery win cars, for the WTF? value. ![](http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/c0.151.851.315/p851x315/411623_449720075039561_507871531_o.jpg)

I've got a real soft spot for Caterhams. I very nearly bought one a few years ago but decided against it and my brother got one instead. Its a hoot. 1.6 K series lump with maybe 130hp and light as a feather means 0-60 in sub 5 seconds for his standard car. ![](http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc190/stevearchive/Dunsfold%20-%20Caterham%20track%20day%202007/dunsfold068.jpg) ![](http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc190/stevearchive/Dunsfold%202008/dunsfold08040.jpg) He does a handling day at Dunsfold each year, straight line, a skid pan and a slalom course and laps of the TG track. I provide support and get time behind the wheel too ![](http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy156/stevearchive1/Caterham/dunsfold111.jpg) ![](http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy156/stevearchive1/Caterham/dunsfold112.jpg) ;D

Some cool cars there. Always been a fan of the Dax Rush myself. Maybe it was because they were made round the corner from my first job ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) My uncle delivers Caterham's all over the country. There are others, Quantum Xtreme ![](http://www.photographyblog.com/gallery/data/511/q800.jpg) the Sylva Striker ![](http://fstatic1.mtb-news.de/img/photos/4/4/3/7/7/_/large/DSC05381.JPG) but I think the Sylva j15 is the closest of the new crop to get to Colin Chapmans ideal ![](http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/images/imgtxt/600/1261229273-sylva-j15.jpg) Always fancied a Sylva Stylus though, took a standard one for a test drive, think it was a 2 litre zetec, blimey, it was quick. Insanely quick ;D Meet the pumped up version. ![](http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110621153643/tractors/images/9/90/Ssc_stylus_rt.JPG) Sorry, not a Lotus 7 though!!
