I'm thinking of getting either an MX5 or an MX3...I know a fair bit about MX5's now, but need to know more about MX3's.
Is the 16v engine the same as the one in the MX5's? Which is the best V6 - 1.8 or 2.5? Is the V6 a Ford engine? What are they like to drive?
etc etc etc...
Thanks

AFAIK its a Mazda only engine, as per Xedos 6 Xedos 9 and others.
I assume its based on the 323 of that era. I drove a new 323F in 1992 and it was horrid.

the MX3 only came in 1600 4 cyl and 1800 V6 as far as i'm aware. they're a Mazda engine, not a ford job either. Although the 2.5 V6 might be the same... I had a 2 litre 323F V6 and it was ace. If the MX3 is owt like it it'll be a lovely car to drive

Is the V6 the one used in the Ford Probe? I believe so - that's why I think there's a 2.5 V6 as well as the 1.8. If they are based on the mid to late 90's 323F's then they should be fun to drive...I had a povo spec 1.5 16v which was great fun Very tempting idea this (especially as you can get one for < £1k)

The MX3 came in 2 forms aparently - 1.6 16v 4 pot (not all were automatic) and 1.8 V6. MX3 mini-review: For girls, poofs and hairdressers. How do you know I'm not a poof and / or a hairdresser?

I think UK spec ones came only came with an auto on the 1.6`s (or at least early ones did). 1.8 24V V6 is the one to go for. They never had the 2.5 V6. My wife used to have one (well J Import Eunos Presso). Super smooth V6 which doesnt feel quick as there is no power band, it just pulls the same from 1000 to 7000RPM. Good handling car and very comfortable for long journeys as well. Plenty of room in the front but forget about the back seats, decent size boot as well. Excellent traction in the snow as well J import cars had different spec to UK and some parts were difficult to get hold off. Engine isnt the easiest to work on though, quad cam V6 in a small engine bay is not good unless you have bony girl arms.

MX3 mini-review: For girls, poofs and hairdressers. The MX-5 gets the same review and its one of the best handling cars around. How come hairdressers get the best cars. ;D ;D Personally the MX-3 is not a car I would buy. But if I wanted a small FWD coupe I would say its one of the best.

Not all - they got the Suzuki Vitara Basically I want a small cheap J runaround (either while the Rocco is off the road for the KR fitment, or maybe as a replacement for the Rocco), I was thinking MX5 but they're still a bit expensive. Then I though MX6, but they're to expensive to run...so that kinda leaves me with an MX3 - unless either the Honda Integra or Nissan Skyline come down in price

Go for the 1.8 V6, as above, it is a Mazda engine, not Ford, despite the 2.5 version going into the Probe. 2.5 should be a straight swap in for 160hp. My 2.0 24v Xedos 6 is superb. Goes like stink if pushed yet one of the quietest cars I've evr been in, especially on the motorway. Good build quality and last well.
However, it took me 2 hrs to change the rear O2 sensor at the weekend as my hands/ arms were to big to get hold of anything easily. Some parts can be expensive (£150 for a timing belt hydraulic tensioner, £38 for a cam belt) but lots of stuff is common Mazda family and available online.
Worth a go I recon.

The Probe got the 2.5 because it's basically a re-bodied MX-6.
What everyone else said re build-quality etc. Mazda weren't cutting corners in the early 90s which is why they needed to build so many boring cars in the late 90s to make some money (also, allegedly conservative JDM new-car market: pfft.)
The MX-5 is a vastly superior car but I like the Euro'd MX-3 posted earlier so if it floats your boat: do it.

I was under this impression, but one of the local boy racers has one and its a 1.6 4 pot. ah yes, bad wording mate shouldda put "mx3 v6's were only 1.8" or something! I quitelike them- we viewed a couple when my missus chopped in her 106 a few years back. She wanted a quirky J coupe, so we viewed MX-3's, 100nx's, seras and another type- i forget now. The MX-3 seemed the best built of the ones we viewed, but that could just be because of the targa roof and flappy spaccer doors on the others! The ones we viewed were both 1600 auto's, and werent looked after- but the 100nx and mx3 went out of the window when i found a sera for sale locally- she had to have it The 1600 auto wasnt involving, probarly make a good commuter- but i can imagine a v6 manual being a spritely performer! and wit a 2.5 shoehorned in there......... gotta be good fun

Had a 1.8 v6 last year for a bit was very smooth car, nice ride and built well but be ready to get wasted by a 1.8 focus or such like!! not fast of the line but pull quite well at motorway speeds in top, mine was a vgc 96 se spec, uk car with 80k made about £1200 on the bay!

I know of one local AZ-3 (as they're called here) that has had a Mazda Familia GTX BPT motor shoved in it, 1800cc DOHC turbo... apparently it makes for a fairly rapid little car. Doesn't do a lot for me looks wise however.
