Hi folks I want to re-bush the front suspension on my Mk2 Jag - and thought that while its apart it would be a good idea to give the various components a lick of paint. In the past on my Cortina I've had parts powder coated, which didn't last very well, and I've used Hammerite which chips rather too easily. I want to do a proper job, and would prefer to brush paint rather than spray (but I do have a compressor if needed). Many thanks in advance. Cortinaman

I've just used stonechip on my suspension and petrol tank and I'm impressed with finish. Smooth and matt. Not sure as to how well it will last as not on road yet

*wheels out standard answer* Jotamastic - it's a 2-pack epoxy-based marine primer which is very tough. Used on oil rigs etc. Despite being 2k it's isocyanate free, so can be handled safely without an air-fed respirator. Rustbuster sell it to the car market as epoxy-mastic. That was tested as an underbody primer by Practical Classics a while ago, and while not the easiest to apply it was by far the best at preventing rust.

What about chassis paint as used on HGV's ? A bit OTT but you could have the parts cadmium plated. I've got Rust Bullet paints for my project - www.rustbulletuk.com/basically the same sort of stuff as POR-15. Paul H

Thats my two suggestions out of the window then What happened to the powder coating? I don't think the powder coater I used was up to much - the powder coating chipped off very easily. I've also heard a few horror stories about parts rusting away under an aparantly intact shell of powder coat. Thanks for all the other suggestions - gives me plenty to look at. I've bought some epoxy mastic from Bilthamber for the underside of the car - so I might see how that goes on, as it might be worth using on the suspension. thanks chaps Cortinaman.

Having tried many paints, some expensive ones included, my favourite is the rather humble Ronseal NoRust. I've used it on rusty boat trailers and it lasts for years. Easy to apply and doesn't go brittle like Hammerite.

I lightly refurbed my rear arms on my cinq sporting about two years ago, I simply wire brushed the hell out of them then painted with red oxide primer, two thin coats, then painted them gloss blue, they have been perfect ever since
