Hi folks
I have a pug 309 gr 1.6 petrol 1986 It has a couple of issues which are really curse word me off now!!
First one the vacume advance on the carb is fooked meaning that it only revs to 3000rpm which equals slow!! I cant seem to locate a replacement even bosch don't have any!! To help cure this it has been manually advanced to allow it to rev to 3500!! top speed 75! Can anyone help??
Also it has a mistery ignition fault causing it to miss fire and cuts out when any load is put through the engine but sometimes it will go away when its driven for a bit(20ish minutes) which involves draging the clutch and cuting out at every 2minutes? Now heres the strange bit!! It does not do this all of the time?? Very intermitant. But it gets stranger it does not do it when I'm at home in the midlands it works fine, but as soon as I get to uni which is in bangor/north wales on the coast it does it on almost every journey!!! I cant figure it out!! Any Ideas??? Cus I cant afford another car and this is doing my head in!!
Thanks Guy

no idea on the dizzy front, but the ignition fault could be a fubarred coil? I had intermittent mis firing on my celica and thats what it turned out to be, totally different type of ignition system though. Hope you get it sorted soon!

Try replacing the points, condenser (if it has them! ), ignition coil, distributor cap, etc. for starters. Obviously, also the spark plugs. Set it up carefully. I am assuming that your car does not run electronic ignition, which is probably wrong! My Imp had this problem and it turned out to be the ignition coil. £20 odd sorted it out. It might be the HT leads. Sometimes, if the resistance increases too far, the coil can overheat trying to fire the spark plugs and it can lead to premature failure. Had this too! Are you certain it's an ignition fault and not a fuel problem? "I'm"

Had a similar fault on my range rover which turned out to be the electronic ignition module.Usualy they are located on the side of the dizzy but mine was in a separate box hidden away.Sound like it needs a good service though ;D

What make is the distributor? If it's Magnet-Marrelli the wires break up inside giving the symptoms you describe. Does it backfire?

i would go for the ignition module then the coil, if the sparks ok it must be fuel, what carb has it got? and has it got a manual choke?

:)When it next pi$$es about, pull the choke out, if it get's better you know there's a fuel starvation problem like a blocked jet ect.

^^^ ive tried but it makes no difference! it will just rev then still cut out when I try to drive away. Is there any way of checking that the ignition module is working corectly? Or anyway of checking the coil is working?? Without having to buy lots of new parts?
