Its a Y reg 1.6 Ghia with 53000 miles on it. Just need to take money with the current owner - he said i could have it for £1000??!! But I think he was just trying to put me off.
Someone is coming to look at my Touran on Thursday - hope he buys it!

If the car is pretty rust free, it's probably worth the asking price to be honest [edit] I'm not saying don't haggle...but don't think it's expensive if the car is generally sound [/edit] Solid 3dr shells are starting to command good money. 3dr Ghia's were pretty rare back in the day, let alone now! If I were considering it, I'd sell off the XR3i interior and replace with a nice tidy Ghia one...they are a lovely place to be. What's the condition of the dashboard like? If it's grey and uncracked you could sell that for about £400-£500 (seriously) which gives you a very cheap car! (if you can then live with buying a cheaper cracked one?) Seeing as this isn't 100% about XR's and RS's now, am I allowed to post a pic up of mine?

I was looking at your wagen thread and it instandly made me want a mk3 escort - its all your fault! Only joking. I just made me want one more! Its got a full xr3 interior - dash (uncracked) door cards (uncut) uncut parcel shelf, no sunroof, dent in the door is from a lawn mower falling against it in the shed, and its rear bumper was damaged just before it went into storage, hence why its missing. The bonnet has a bit of surface rust and the bottom of the wings could do with some work. But the rest of it is pretty much solid. I though he was joking when he said £1000 - I was going to offer £300, but kept my mouth shut and made it about restoring and using the car rather than about what the cost was. Think it worked. But he said he will think about it as it was his son's car. He was killed back in Kuwait back in the iraq war in the early 90's. thats why it hasnt moved in so long! It was passed to his son from his wife when he passed his test. The interior was knackered as they use to have a dog - which proceeded to eat the interior - this xr3 came into the scrapyard and they lifted everything off it for £80. The wheels came later - they have brand new Pirelli's on them, still has the bobbles on the tread. They were fitted the week before his son went away to Iraq. Really nice guy and I kind of feel for him!

Let him know how much you'll look after the car. Make him aware that it's going to be in good hands, that you want to return it to its former glory. That goes a lot further than money generally. Bumpers = dead easy & cheap to source and sort. Door shouldn't be too much of a problem and (personally) selling the XR interior and returning it back to Ghia spec will be a very good move. As will selling off the lattice wheels and sticking something a little more period correct on. Mk4 wheels generally don't suit Mk3's IMHO. See what he comes back with, offer him a bit less, but also some towards Help for Heroes (or something similar). Like I say, it's an emotional thing for him and it's also a nice gesture anyway when making a purchase like this.

I do like a nice early XR3... Apparently when the Mk3 was being developed an XR-van was very, VERY close to being put in to production (I must find an image )... I remember XR3's and such like being all over the place when I was a nipper but this really sealed the deal for me...

So you bought back your own old car - repect! Let me know how it goes! Ah not quite! That first photo was taken in 1985 by my (future) apprentice trainer. He owned from '85 to 2000 when I bought it. Due to various commitments, I only collected it from my parents garden in 2010. Its down to a shell now so i can let in new metalwork.

I'll be honest, the one I'm looking at looks worse being covering in so much dust and curse word, but definately not that much rust (I hope!)

Darren, you've made my day! The Kat kit has always been a closet lust of mine. I've always loved it and it's the only body kit I'd ever consider fitting to a car. Hell, I'd even buy a 3dr *just* to fit the kit to if I could find a complete kit. I've never seen that shot of the black one before. It looks SO right! I've got the original price list upstairs (good old photocopy A5 sheets like a lot of small company brochures were back in the day!) It's such a shame that the chances of me finding a kit are slim to none.
