I have just bought a '97 e36 318is with the m44 engine (I think). I finally got it taxed on Saturday, all has been fine until last night, I drove to our Monday night football game fine ( about 15 miles), we won 2-0, started the car and it died again after a few seconds. This happened a few times, so I tried revving it to keep it running, it would rev reluctantly and a bit lumpily but when I let out the clutch it would die. So I left it 20 mins, it started up and idled ok and drove but every 100yrds or so the revs would drop there would be a noise like running over a loose metal manhole cover ( clonk clonk) then it would pick up again. It did this for about a mile and a half then it seemed to be fine, I stopped at a garage and put some more fuel in (as the light had come on) and it drove the rest of the way home perfectly. Now my (hopeful) guess is that it picked up some crud from the bottom of the tank. Last weekend I changed the rear brake pipes which involved running the fuel down and dropping and tilting the tank about. I have also read about sticking idle control valves but could this cause the problem? and what was the metallic clonking? have a cool merc i spotted near work for you time.

The picking up curse word from the bottom of the tank is a myth, the fuel is allways picked up from the bottom of the tank, full or empty. Easyest thing to do would be get it code read TBH, it may just be that the light comes on to late and your already too low of fuel to run right but I doubt it TBH most modern cars just run out of fuel instantly unless there is a fuel supply issue, get the codes read and look out for TPS or more likely cam sensor, i've done quite a few cam semsors on later BMs but TBH usually on the 6 pot diesels, I don't get to see many petrols nowdays idle valve could be a problem but they usually play up when hot more than cold clonking i have no idea without hearing it

I've had experiences that dispute this I've definitely run out of fuel and found filters and the accumulator/pressure regulator thingy on a mk3 Polo full of black petrol

When the tank is full and the engine running the inline filter is always full of nice clear petrol. When you have lots of petrol in the tank any detritous ends up in suspension in a much larger volume of liquid. As a result its far less likely to get pulled through the lines. You can see this happening quite easily if you use a teapot. The spout almost always takes from the bottom of the pot. Make yourself a nice cuppa using loose leaf tea and you will find that the first few cups you pour will cause far fewer tea leaves to be deposited on the strainer than you will from the last cup.

It was more the fact that I had disturbed the tank recently rather than low fuel. Would the generation of a fault code cause the light on the dash to illuminate? Because nothing lit up. Could the noise be fuel igniting in the cat/exhaust due to a misfire?

Plastic doesnt rust, if you have rust in your fuel filter in an e36, sue who ever you bought your fuel from I had a 318is, and if the light came on, you had a carefull 2 miles tops

Was the right fuel even in it? And then the correct fuel was put in... Sounds like it was trying to detonate porridge...

IIRC you only get an MIL with an emissions problem, if the ECU cam cope and keep the emissions in tolrerence than you just get a stored code and no perminant MIL, a normal OBDii reader wont fit you'll need an adapter cos BM and Merc decided to be pains in the ass on certain years and didnt use the OBDii port, if you are near N London i have a reader and BM adapter i'll read it FOC

Thanks for the replies, I got my friendly local garage to read the codes for me,
they were from memory
108 - continuous voltage 112 - cam sensor 10 - upstream o2 sensor 107 - terminal 15 PSU 148 - something to do with the immobiliser
after a bit of googleing the symptoms seem to be related to the cam sensor (apart from the clonking) so I will replace this as a matter of course despite it not having happened since.
108 - continuous voltage is apparently a short somewhere and terminal 15 is the ignition switch according to the internets. No idea what to do about these, although I suppose it might all be part of the same problem.
Also my idle control valve is stuck I think as I can hear the actuator thingy buzzing away, so I will investigate this weekend when I change the thermostat.

I had a 318is, and if the light came on, you had a carefull 2 miles tops Mmmmm, something weird there..I've got to just over 30 miles before I chickened out! ICV on mine plays up sometimes. More so when cold, will stall comming to a stop but start again straight away. Revs "jump" to when it needs a clean. Mine's an M42, M44 icv's are easily accessable without taking anything else off. Toothbrush & brakecleaner works a treat. Usually works for about 6 months before it starts playing up again..
