Today I have mostly been driving and buying TAT. I awoke at 6.30, had breakfast and left the house at 7.00 in my newly rented transit diesel van (£60.00 for the day) I then Wazzed down the A12, M25, M23 and A27 and arrived in Chicester at 9.30, grabbed a drink and a Wrap from sainsburys and made my way to G&R Harris Car spares and Salvage at Nutbourne for 10.15. After a little wait for the classic specialist to arrive and fetch my car to the hard standing area I started work. A few hours later I had a pile of bits and a Very, Very empty wallet, My little haul comprised..... One imaculate N/S door complete with glass, mirror, mech' and trim (no speaker holes) One Very good O/S door complete with glass, mirror, mech' and trim (no speaker holes) One straight rear bumper One O.K front bumper One Excellant rust free headlight filler panel (uber rare) One rust free front valance One grill complete and crack free Two "Sapporo" script side badges in excellant condition One N/S/R side glass in superb condition (frame is rust prone, O/S was rotton unfortunatly) Two rear lights Pair of chrome roof trims And to finish the best preserved front passenger seat ever and a very very good drivers seat. Total price was a steep £335.00 But I will say they were very helpfull, friendly organised and classic friendly which goes a long way in my book. So including the van hire and diesel the day cost me £425 but the doors alone make it worth while as they never come up in this condition, the Guy said that he could have sold them several times over so I did well to get there first Thanks go to Colt1982 for posting this in the ebay thread, cheers dude.

Good day's work! I take it you didn't call in at Datman's on the way back then?
Can you remind me why that was being scrapped?
That 'DG' registration suggests it might have started life owned, or certainly registered by, Colt Car Company.

Was it going to export? When a scrap dealer gets an old RWD J in they NEVER sell the car complete as they make so much sending them to africa for the mechanical spares.

The 'scrap' car looked in excellent condition. I wonder why it ended up in the scrapyard. Mechanical failure or something?

I had one of them many moons ago. Was auto and was one of the slowest cars i've ever owned. Looked cool though. Can they be made to go fast without too much work? I had a later shaped one too which was a turbo that went ok but didn't look as good. I want one again now!

I'm going to join the general trend of the thread and ask "why was that Sapporo was being broken?"

...or possibly removed from the road due to no tax or insurance and deemed "destruction only" many great cars meet their ends this way I didn't know that was happening. How long has that been going on and who has the authority to say they are for destruction only? Mike Its something thats been going on for a good few years now. Untaxed cars are clamped and seized. If the owners don't cough up the tax, a fine, the cost of removal (normally £150ish) and storage costs (£15 a day) and the car is deemed to be worth less than say £1000 the car is destroyed after 2 weeks. If its worth more than £1000 it goes to auction and is sold. Sometimes the seized cars that are not worth the minimum amount are simply crushed, sometimes they go to breakers with the express instuction that the cars cant go back on the road. I think the deal is similar with insurance except I don't think you get the chance to get your car back. Its simply scrapped! In answer to your question- I think its the police/council who have the authority to clamp and remove cars. Overall its a good thing as it keeps the uninsured scrap off the roads, but I have known some really nice old cars fall foul of this legislation.

I think whoever declared it "scrapped" could be in trouble though because they need to have destroyed the car so it cant get back on the road.

Glad you got some nice bits and that (presumably) the rusty one of the two in your sig will benefit but to look at that red Sapporo knowing it has to be crushed makes me sick to my stomach. As if they arent rare enough.
As well as confiscation a lot of yards enforce the "once its in it cant come back out" rule as well, I know a guy who offered good money for a very tidy Fourtrak that had been inexplicably weighed in and I tried to buy a 323 from a salvage yard and was told it was cat B therefore had to be broken (It only had a dent in the door thats why I was trying to buy it, since when is that cat B material?).
I know flood damaged cars have to be broken by law, might be that, or maybe a welders nightmare/dream underneath.

Thanks for the information, Tim.
Vic, it's a mystery how insurance companies decide what cars come under what category and also what cars they decide are write-offs in the first place. We've had stuff that has been written off only needing a replacement bumper cover, then other stuff that is smashed to hell and they say is okay to repair. The only conclusion you can reach is that they are completely incompetent idiots who haven't got a clue about what they are doing.
Not sure about flood damaged cars. We've had several of those. The most recent was a nearly new Mondeo. Basically it had wet carpets. Nothing else wrong with it and the idiots made it a Category C. Dried it out and sold it.

The problem is insurance companies wont use a breakers yard, even for cosmetic stuff. A 12 year old Mitsubishi Colt will be an instant write off no matter how nice and low mileage it is in the event of a bump because a new bumper from Mitsu is about £500, but from a breakers its about £30.
The annoying thing about that Mondeo is that its tainted for life as a CAT C write off, and for years to come some people will be put off from buying it when they do an HPi check even though theres nothing wrong with it. Yet a Mondeo thats been wiped out and badly stitched back together but not reported or claimed for (like what happens sometimes if the driver was drunk or asleep, or just only on 3rd party ) will go undetected.

Yes, you have a point with the Mitsubishi example, but there are many cases where that situation doesn't arise. Japanese parts prices are always ridiculous though. For example, a door mirror for a Mistubishi Pinin cost £150, plus it had to be painted to match the body! Nothing available second hand anywhere!
Ford, Vauxhall and VW bits from the official dealerships are often surprisingly cheap though, then there are places like GSF and URO whom the body shops use for their repair parts.

This paticular yard is very classic friendly, I was chatting to Jeremy for quite a while yesterday, he is employed soley to list "interesting" stuff on ebay and deal with any questions/ organise customers who want bits etc. He told me that normally any classic in good condition like this Sapporo would have been sold complete, unfortunatly when the Sapporo was collected from the elderly gentlemans garage somebody in the office "mistakenly" issued a "certificate of destruction" from the DVLA and aparently once this is issued the car has to be squashed no matter what Fortunatly for me I confirmed that I was going to get there first thing on saturday morning so I was allowed first "dibs" on it, when Jeremy drove it round from the storage building where they keep all the "good stuff" I couldn't belive how solid it looked, on closer examination though there was some serious rot in the screen pillers beneath the really wibblepoo vinal roof and the front wings were badly rotten at the bottom rear corners (as always). It had also rotted out behind the rear mudflaps (Are mudflaps the stupidest thing ever? if you leave them on long enough they ALWAYS cause more rot!!) So even though it looked very clean it would have needed a lot of work to get back to a healthy condition, especially when ALL body panels are obsolete. On top of that it was an auto! The wheels might be of interest to somebody on here though, They need a refurb, but they are Genuine Colt accessary Alloy wheels and ae quite rare (4x114.3)....£75.00
