This is in all honesty a bit of a rant, never the less I would value your opinions or possibly experiences of the same situation. Anyway here goes. I have a few friends/people I know who are VW fans, we regularly discuss all things car at meets and shows however i have always failed to understand why some VW lovers dismiss every other manufactures offerings as being in someway inferior. I'm not saying they all do, but it seems a good few of them do. I personally like some VW's but I like anything old and different, having said that i know everyone has their own opinion on things and everyone is different, to a point but even seeing my sierra almost appears to bring tears to their eyes. simply put, is it right to dismiss every vehicle that isn't produced by a certain brand? I guess i might offend by saying this but this is purely my opinion. let abuse commence.....

I a VW guy, but thats only by accident as I was after a mk2 fiesta and ended up getting a mk2 polo by accident. In the VW scene, I find it boring that things seem to be done to formula. a bit of variety is always good, and it does seem that people are blinkered and should see the wider scene.

Tribalism extends even into the car scene. Remember that by sticking with your Sierra, you are an individual

optima21- are you the same optima21 that replaced the drivers seat of your mk2 polo for a toilet? If so then I understand how much you like variety!
I used to be that way with VW's I even turned down some cars I have always wanted to own (Mercedes 19 2.3-16, 205 gti, 106 gti, mk2 escort 1300 etc. etc.) purely on the basis that they weren't VW. I then completely withdrew myself from cars buying a Citroen ZX (albeit a Volcane) and had a bit of time concentrating on interests that I used to have before the whole VW thing. I now visit the car sites and check out cool cars but I will never be as involved as I was, it turned me into quite a horrible person.

I was kinda brought up to like Fords. They've been in the family a lot and there are some nice ones with us (3 Lotus Cortinas, MK2 RS1800, MK1 RS2000 are worthy of note). But it was the mundane bread'n'butter ones that really struck it with me, because that's the sort i'd be driving.
My first car was a beige 5dr Escort and i didn't consider anything else. I've since had about 45 Fords, the last one a '90 XR3i EFi which was torn in half when someone pulled out on me on a dual carriageway.
But trading cars at the time, and also being a big fan of Astra/Cavalier/Novas, i'd bought my first VW - a MK2 Scirocco. I was astonished by how solid this car felt compared to the Fords in particular, despite being no heavier than the Escorts.
So with an agile pocket rocket in mind to replace my daily, i wanted something like a MK1 Fiesta Supersport with a Zetec in it, or Nova like a 1.8 SR. But now i'd driven a VW i had to check out the Polo. I bought a MK2 Polo coupe 1.3S and was stunned - it was like a Fiesta, only made of rock. And lighter! So i bought one of those and stuck a 1.6 16v in it.
I've had it for nine years now. I can't imagine what i could replace it with. I've tried everything from 205 Mi16 to a 1.7 Anglia but nothing can prize me away from this thing for daily use on our cluttered roads. It's not a VW thing, i couldn't care less about Golfs or the VW scene. But these early Polos and little engines they made are really pretty good.

I find that brand loyalty falls into 2 main catagories.
1, people who have had many cars over the years, sampling a varied spread of different manufactures and favour the ones which served them best (either through reliability or function)
2, those who have only ever had one make (maybe a couple other but usually from the same stable) and have never really experienced anything other, so therefore know nothing and cannot possibly make an informed decision, (yes, propbably aimed more at the 18-25 VAG owners through my experience)
That said, there are always exceptions.
I've become a massive fan of 80's/90's Mercedes over the last few years, but that's through experience rather than ignorance

Old fords all drive the same thanks to Richard Parry-Jones, rust like hell but are a hoot to drive and cheep to fix. Peugeot/Citroen never made an uncomfortable car, gear linckages never felt like thay were attached to the car but all had good engines and are again cheep to fix. Pre 1990 mercedes basic unrefined engines but built quality no other car manufacturer could get close to, post 1990 it all went wrong. VW/Audi realy well built but always felt a bit German, designed to do a job realy well but no sole and Vauxhalls just understear. That said every one have at some point made some fantastic cars and also some complete snotters. Those with an open mind to cars will seek out what thay like and the rest follow a one make dream after that perfect example to out shine the smaller man(a bit like middle management, always thinking there the best) when all the shop floor boys know different.

yeah thats me and the interior its a few years since Ive had the car like that, as I don't have space for the porta loo now due to taking other things with me for next year I've fitted a 3 way fridge, so my milk doesnt go off for making tea's and coffee's, I got fed up with charging batteries up the cooler still not getting cold when I rebuilt the car I didnt go down the cliched rat look route as I'm fine having a 1L engine and standard suspension, even though friends were wanting me to put a supercharged/turbocharged engine in it and slamming to the floor on stetched tyres etc, but even the 1L engine cleaned up well

I really like VWs,especially Golf GTIs Split screen campers and the like. However i would always consider other makes and try to be broad-minded about all cars. Anyway while all these people are buying the VWs it gives the rest of us more chance of buying up all the other cool cars ie bmw e30,Saab Turbos,Nissan Skylines Cosworths,Supras,4x4s ect ect ect..............

Like any status symbol, the VW range is enjoying something of a golden era at the moment. On the whole, they're a good car, but I personally don't think they stand too far above the competition. I do have a VW, but I prefer my Austins as they fit me better and do what I want better than my VW does.

Some people are brand loyal because thats what they know, they have the parts on the shelf, know the specialists, know the quirks of the marque. A mate of mine won't have anythign thats not a Mopar but doesn't diss other brands. He just has built up 30+ years experience mostly with one brand and it suits him.
Then there are people who are scenewhores who think that they have to have brand-X because it goes with their tattoos and trainers.
And then theres all the people in between.

For me its Landrover stuff, been 'into' them since i was a teenager, i know their foibles etc etc, but i'm not daft enough to think they are best thing since sliced bread. Have had Cortinas,so have an affection for them, plus a Princess, Pug 406's, (current driver 2003 hdi estate). Worst car ever was a P plate Primera SRi .... worst car i've ever had. (engine fantastic but everything else was nightmare) The car scene would be a dull place if only a couple of marques dominated.

My problem is the opposite - I try out as many different brands as I can! Only a few more to get now.. I did enjoy the Dub scene when I was in it though.. Maybe most of any brand ive owned
