OK folks when it comes to yanks, I've run a few but don't know one hell of a lot. I need some info about mating up Small Block GM motors and autoboxes.
As I understand it the engines have a bolt pattern that matches up with the gearbox only if its designed too.
I.e Chevy, caddy etc used one bolt pattern and Buick/Olds/Pontiac use another. What I want to know is interchangeability. If I have a TH350 from a pontiac say, will it bolt up to a Small Block from say a chevy? Or what!!! Help, please.
Oh and also..........is the jaguar GM400 autobox really a TH400 in disguise?

Buick-Olds-Pontiac-Cadillac all share the same bellhousing (as would the Rover V8 presumably). Chevy V8s do not share a bellhousing with the other GM counterparts. However both big block and small block Chevy have the same bellhousing. In fact they may even share a bellhousing with the old Chev inline sixes.
None of the ford engine families (Small Block/Windsor, Cleveland/Modified, FE, and 429-469, OHC Modular V8s) have interchangeable bellhousings and the Windsor motors came with two different bellhousing bolt patterns pre and post-1965. I can't tell you if any of these interchange with Ford's various inline 6 motors or whether the different I6s families share a common bellhousing.
Chrysler polysphere V8s, 1950s hemis, small block V8 and V10s share a bellhousing although the Viper V10 may be different. I think the new hemi and the 4.7OHC V8 may share a bellhousing with the above. While the bellhousings are the same the flywheel flanges/flexplates may not interchange, I can't quite remember, but I think you need some sort of adapters if swapping trannies. Chrysler B/RB/426 Hemi has a different bellhousing pattern to the above. Both the Slant 6 and the Aussie Hemi 6s have unique bellhousings although apparently some 245 Hemi 6s were cast with a small block V8 bellhousing.
I think but don't quote me on this that AMC V8s and inline sixes may share a bellhousing but you would probably want to ask someone else about that.
I think IHC V8s and 4cylinders share a bellhousing (the four is just a V8 with one bank of cylinders lopped off), but I don't know if these interchange with the IHC inline sixes.
There, all you ever wanted to know about big American engines and their bellhousings. What an exciting Friday night I am having.

Top man and great info....... This is the bit I'm after though
So thats helped a lot, next dumb question.......the chevy bellhousing rises to a point whereas all the others dip into a little valley, this is correct right?
So a dipped valley bolt pattern engine will bolt up to a dipped valley bellhosuing of anykind?

I think but don't quote me on this that AMC V8s and inline sixes may share a bellhousing but you would probably want to ask someone else about that. As far as I know this is true and it applies across the range. Thought i'd add that purely for information purposes ;D

Some GM transmissions are dual bolt pattern. Usually the curse word ones. The T200R4 is dual pattern though, but needs some prep before it can be used behind anything too healthy.
I'm sure there are pictures on the net somewhere of the differing bolt patterns but the B-O-P one is the "lazy d" shape one.
The GM400 AFAIK is the same as the TH400 as is the trans used in Rolls Royce Silver Shadows and its appeared a few other places too. They may only be INTERNALLY the same though...
IIRC AMC bellhousings do differ slightly by year but not on the "common" V8 models. The ones with Chrysler trans in them are AMC bellhousings on the box. The proliferation of Borg Warner boxes used in the 60s **seem** to be interchangeable...
Not sure if the V6 Chryslers have the same pattern as the V8s as a trick is to use a V6 bellhousing on a V8 to mate the Supra box for a manual conversion. According to Moparts anyway...
