Hey guys, I would like to introduce to you my 1980 RX30 Toyota Cressida 2.0L 89bhp - I have always been a huge old school J fan, and this is my most recent attempt at a project after an R32 and an MA61 Celica Supra (Lots of MA61 Parts for sale by the way - Soon to be a thread in the Parts for sale section!) The day I got her... Glare does a good job of hiding the rust! One of my chums... Plan of action?? 2 things: 1/GET RID OF THE RUST!! It's not too bad, just lots of it - Lots of sanding, and some fun with filler should take care of it. 2/MOAARR POWEERR! This is the fun bit - In my garage now sits a JDM Only 1G-GTE 2.0L I6 Twin Turbo, which I plan on shoehorning in and mating up to the current 4-speed manual (To save money - Budget Build!) The problem is I do not have a clue what I am doing! I tinker but have never taken on a full conversion - So this is going to be an ' Interactive build!'. Where at every step of the way I will say 'What the hell is this!?', 'Where does this go?!', Or even 'WHY IS THIS ON FIREE!?' And hopefully I can tap into your infinite wisdom and you can guide me through this build step-by-step... And of course, if anyone lives nearby feel free to come lend a hand, or sit and watch me ruin a perfectly usable classic... I would love to see this completed... And ideally before my birthday in February - I do work a stupid amount but I will try and keep this thread flowing as well as possible! So, first question for you all - What the hell do I need for this conversion!? I currently have Engine, Turbos, Loom, Manifolds, And I am looking to sort an Intercooler. Also, the engine still has the Belts for AC and Power steering - Can these just be whipped off without any issues?? NOOB ALERT - Flame suit on...

Fair play for giving it a go, if you do..
don't want to put a dampener on your ideas but this could involve alot of custom work and can be expensive. I've seen countless threads like this from dreamers who never even start it and definitely don't finish it. You need to be realistic to yourself if you're going to complete it aswell.
Do you know if the box will mate? Have you taken measurements to make sure the engine fits? don't know how much power or torque the twin turbo 1G is pushing out but it will probabley be too much for the original 4 speed. Do you have the loom and Engine management with the engine? Do you have all the equipment to fit the engine aswell as work on it? Have you ever worked on an engine before?
You sound very inexperienced to to try and take on a project like this and in order for it to be a reality rather than a waste of money and a pipe dream you're going to need to do alot of reading up and research mate, of course its do-able, but it sounds like you want somebody to do it all for you without actually doing it?
Its going to take alot of man hours and work, I think you'd have been much better using the money spent on the 1G doing up the Cressida so body-wise it was sorted, learn about basic mechanics whilst servicing and maintaining the engine what was in it and then think about doing an engine conversion on it.
Not p!ssing on your cornflakes, just offering you truthfull advice

Thanks for your response - I get where you are coming from but I am pretty stubborn when I get one of these ideas, and I guess I have to start somewhere!
I have done quite a bit of reading up - It definitely will fit (There is a 1UZ and a 1JZ RX30 Cressida's out there). The box may not fit, but I can either modify the bellhousing, I have spoken to someone who will be able to make me an adaptor plate, or worst case a W58 5-speed will need to go in. The 4-Speed was extremely over-engineered and is used behind a number of V8s in the states so I am sure it can handle the power. I do have the Loom and ECU. I do have quite a few tools but may need a few more things, first thing being an engine hoist - But I have budgeted for these and I do know that they are things that I will need. I have serviced cars and tinkered/tuned but never anything to this extent.
I do get what you are saying but I am hoping that slowly this will be something that I can get to work - there is a few things that I am going to pay to have done, like the wiring and the paint, but otherwise I would like to do as much as possible myself.
Mainly what I want is advice and morale support - If I tell someone about it then it has to happen!!

Fair play then mate.
Yep, everyones got to start somewhere and it could be a really good project, just be prepared for extra costs, ballaches and delays.
Have you heard the 1G running? If I were you the first thing I'd be doing is stripping it down and replacing anything that needs doing, then you know its ready to roll and you can concerntrate soley on getting it in and mated upto the gearbox. Did you get all the ancilleries with the engine? Turbo's etc? I'd also be checking these over to make sure they're not going to cause problems and end up on a fault finding mission once everythings been installed, if you make sure they're all bang on now, you wont need to worry about them further down the line (costs, time etc)
You also want to be looking at the suspension with a bigger engine going in, exhaust system and stuff likes mounts, it would be handy if you could weld or know somebody who can as there could be fabrication involved.
If you do finish it, then massive respect...Good luck.

i think there's allready a W gearbox on the original engine, but you can tell that from the VIN plate, read the code after trans/axle. If it's W40, then the proper 5 speed TT box shouldn't be too hard to swap in i think. oh, and please do it! I had a 1G-GTE for my old Cressida (GX71), but never started on the swap, and now the car is sold. The sound they make is TEH SEX

Fair play to you mate, remember that the first ever engine swap was done by someone who hadn't done it before, this could bring together a lot of you local car community, just bear in mind that bacon sarnies and tea always help get people to come and help you again. Good luck and stick with it, could be a killer car when finished.

DaveEdge - I haven't heard it running but yeah I will be stripping it apart and making sure all is good - No play in the turbos etc and replacing timing belts and gaskets. Also I have got someone who should be able to fab me up the mounts and an exhaust. @the Doctor - You are right, this engine uses a W58 I believe, which would make me think that I may be able to get the engine to work with the W40 (Fingers crossed!) That GX71 sounds awesome... I have got to do it now!! raymondmarble - I am based in Crewe, Cheshire for all those looking to lend a helping hand Thanks!

Sound like an interesting project, i'd recommend signing up to: www.toymods.org.au/forums/forum.phpif you havent already! I could probably find a home for the current 2.0litre lump too, my van runs the same engine.

If you want it to work with the W40, you need to swap the bellhousing i think, it's probably less work to swap the tailhousings (if they fit! i don't know) and use the much stronger and better geared W58.

I should be able to swap the bellhousing so I can use the W40 - the only reason I want to do this is to avoid the cost of the W58 initially, Although in the long run it will probably have one

Correct! Cool guy - you know him? Known him for years :-) I never thought he'd sell the RX30.. He was pretty down to see it go - but it has gone to a good home! (I like to think ) It has changed a lot since those pics - all the trims off and a lot of the rust repaired now -
