Hey up, quick one here. A random one at that... Can you tow an LT77 gearbox? (not that I need to, it's a technical question). I've even discussed this with my lecturers, to no avail! I turn to you, the knowledgable RR crowd to find out! So far my view has been 'no' due to a layshaft driven oil pump that APPARENTLY feeds pressurised oil to bearings in the gearbox (wether it's splash, or lubing plain bearings I can't tell). This layshaft won't rotate unless the engine is (or in gear with clutch depressed?) turning so when towing, no oil is supplied = box dies. Does anyone have an SD1 or Landrover book to hand that would explain what the oil pump does and why you can't tow it? I just want a nice neat written explanation and it cleared up Thanks to anyone who can help! Apparently the SD1 manual says "no you shouldn't tow, if must, short distance and no faster than 30mph".

Auto box right? Yes you can but you must have the engine running (and *I think* it must be in drive). The fluid pump is driven by the engine running so without that it will run dry.

The LT77 is a five speed manual, replaced by the R380 which is also a five speed manual.

lt77 is a manual box with an internal oil pump. not sure on this as most manuals run a splash and dip lube system. does the pump oil the shafts and bearings like an engine? disconect the prop if your worried, or put the rear wheels on a spec lift

Nah it's not an "I've got to do it question", we were just trying to settle it.
General consensus from Landie and SD1 people seems not to tow it great distances at anything over 30mph.....I'd love to know wether it lubricates plain bearings or is just splash, as you say!

The pump is driven from the tail of the layshaft and oils various bearings by means of passages in the mainshaft. It's to assist the splash lubrication, and not really replace it. All the Sherpa Haynes manual says is that LT77 equipped models should have the propshaft removed for towing, as the oil pump will not operate without the engine running.

I have a LT77 in my minor and I didn't know that so cheers. Although it hasn't let me down yet ; )

I think its OK for shortish distances, I wouldn't dolly an SD1 from lands end to John O groats though.
