I heard a thing on the radio yesterday about Southend cruisers using roasting tins. The idea is that you take a front wheel drive car and put roasting tins under the back wheels then drive at speed round car parks with the back sliding around. Cool!

Not a new thing at all.
I remember seeing clueless goons doing the same with McDonald's trays under the wheelZ of Nova's at least ten years ago.
Twattery of the highest order IMO.

Same as when they need to put diesel down to do burnouts and such like.
Doing smoke dsiplays and the like is cool only if your car is powerful enough to do it unaided. If you can efortlessly powerslide your Sierra/200SX/Firebird/whatever in a cloud of burning rubber then thats ripe for rezpekt. However if you have to get out, put tea trays under the wheels, splash diesle on the gorund and rev the balls off the puny motor then it just makes you look like a veh ghey wannabe.
We then need to have the discussion about how sensible it is to do burnouts, powerslides, drifiting, etc. on open land like car parks or heaven forbid public roads.
Any fool can do a burnout in any old knacker. See the "readers' burnout" pages of Car Craft if you don't believe me. It takes a cool hod of power to be able to drop some smoke from a 20-30 MPH roll and that my friends is what I would say was gosh darn rootin' tootin' cool.

Is it just me, or is anyone else thinking of the inevitable crunching/breaking noise when the tray/tin wears through to the road, jabs into the tyre and suddenly you're doing 20mph with flat tyres on the road and the handbrake on! I say go RWD, go powerful and do it properly

yeah, you could use a bit of turkey fat for extra 'slidiness', bung a few potatoes and some garlic in too for extra points. Lovely.

Now I think I have found the real purpose of roasting tins.... Take one MGB and fit a v8 with a weber carb and then have an issue with the bonnet clearance. Now I had a problem that I had to solve cheaply and as easily as possible, as the carb set up is only going to be on the car for approx 12 months until I can afford the 4 barrel edelbrock carb I want along with a more appropriate inlet manfiold so clearance will no longer be an issue and it will fit under a standard bonnet. So I was walking round Asda and I spotted a roasting tin and not only with imagination did it look like a bonnet bulge but also looked the perfect size, so £1.89 later I now had a 'bonnet bulge' So I got home and did a trial fit and low and behold it was the perfect size for the air box set up we had made, so I set out about fitting it... So there you have it, the 'proper' purpose of a roasting tin resulting in a temporary bonnet bulge for £1.89

Ha! I love it! Sadly though, it does remind me of an Escort mkIII that I used to see in Birmingham where the bonnet scoop looked like it had been made out of an ice cream tub...
