Hey all I havn't been on here much, but i've been car searching for a while now. And i've found one Tis a 1991 Golf Mk2 Driver 1.6 for £1000 Basically all I wanted to know is if someone could catch me on msn sometime, i could show them the car i'm looking at and maybe give me a few pointers of what to look for when i go and check the car out, oh and give me the pros and cons of this car if any Since I originally was going for a Mk1, i've been persuaded to go for the Mk2 as mechanically it's a sounder car. Wise decision?

Does sound a lot, My friend recently sold a tidy 1.8 driver for £600, then bought a slightly scabby 16v GTi for £36

£1000 is mega money for a driver.
I had an '89 1600 driver a few years back, and they're pretty dissapointing performance wise to be honest. Plus they roll lots round corners and the brakes are the worst of any car i've ever driven... puny solid discs that fade really badly.
Things to look out for..
Rust- check under all the arch trims, as they can rot out badly round there, also the sills and inner arch areas.
Mechanical- It'll probably be on one of the awful pierberg auto choke carbs. Mine had one and it was ass. I'd recommend a weber conversion immediately.
Suspension- Check all the bushes
Mechanically its not that far different from a mk1, except its heavier and not as quick.
Personnally i'd buy a 3 or 400 quid gti and use the rest of the 1000 insuring it. It'll be a much better car.

I bought a Golf special magazine produced by Performance VW magazine in WHSmiths the other day (it was half price!) and that had a buyer's guide in it.

We stashed a Golf Driver for a bit, an auto one - was okay...bit tatty. Sold it for 100 quid in the end I think?
Faded to a nice gentle pinky colour ;D

Getting your first car can be exciting (well to be honest, the excitement never seems to disappear with future purchases!) but don't start your car buying career by being overcharged!
Once you start, it's difficult to stop. I still have an amazing ability to be ripped off!

£1000 does sound quite steep, Is there an leighway on the price? It really should be mint for that. Id get a tidy one for cheaper.

A Lad I work with is thinking of selling his Mk2 driver soon, it's lowered on 15" Brock rims, probably wants about £700-£800, I can get picks if required

A grand sounds a bit scene tax-alicious to me. I'd be wanting a pretty tidy GTI for that money.

Ah well, now we know its lowered and 'appears to be on Borbet C's the £1000 price tag becomes a little more clear. Still a little on the steep side, I'd give £800 for it!

I've not owned a modified car, would any of this cause insurance companies to run a mile?

It does look really good and far more worthy of the £1000 price tag than before... But I'd still haggle down or consider buying elsewhere. There's £400 worth of wheels there (?), and I bought an '89, white driver for £30 the year before last that's still going strong. A few hundred quid would have had it looking as good as that one plus then your choice of wheels.
Golfs are great to pick up mega cheap, parts to modify them are plentiful and cheap, so you can create your own for less.
If you buy something dirt cheap, you can then spend your spare cash on getting some paint work done (maybe a respray in your own colour choice), then some subtle mods with new parts that you've chosen. Far more satisfying in my mind.
That said, it'd still be a good starting point should you go for it... Up to you, either way you're headed in the right direction ;D

If the wheels etc are included, and the car is in really good shape then I'd almost be inclined to say yes to the £1k. That way you have a sweet-looking car straight out of the box from day 1. No messing about saving for wheels & tyres, fannying about changing the springs etc.....

The original Autotrader ad. also shows it sat on cheapo 5-spokes.
A Golf owning mate (he's doing a resto on a MkII 8v) reckons those are cheap GSF pattern bumpers and that it's had a quick blowover.
It's also a 5 door with a 1.6 carb lump and isn't even original spec.
Worth peanuts, in other words.

how old are you? how long have you been driving? when i was 18 with no years no claims mine cost 1200-1300 a year to insure fully comp. i think it would have been just over 1000 TPFT. thats with no mods. definately check insurance prices first!
good cars though and with a weber on it they're pretty reliable.
