My Chrysler number plate is alledgedly worth some money (which I find hard to believe). Its also the wrong year letter. Now the car is currently on US style plates so it doesn't look noticable but I was going to get some new UK style plates made up and then it will be really obvious its wrong. The car is a 1985 but the plate is AEL16C or something like that.
So if I want to sell the plate what are the costs involved?
If I get no buyers (as I suspect) can I just contact the DVLA and ask for an age related plate issuing for the car? Any idea what this will cost?

Might not be the wrong year mate. Wasn't 'C' reg '85/6? Try selling on Ebay and state that the buyer is to pay transfer costs. If it doesn't reach the price you want, just keep the plate on the car and save all the hassle, it might be worth more in years to come.

Its a 1965 C plate... it would be C16AEL if it were a 1985...
I might just give eBay a whirl with it see what happens but I can't imagine anyone paying actual money for it, but then I am constantly astounded by what people pay for with number plates... Alledgedlyits worth £400 but if someone gave me £40 I'd be impressed (so long as I wasn't out of pocket anywhere for fees).
I don;t normally hold with registration transfers but I want to lose the yank style plates because 1- they are tatty as hell, 2- the front is blue and white so illegal and I don't need any extra reasons for a tug by the law, 3- the plates have "Rockin' my life away" stamped on them and it makes me die of shame every time someone spots it... running a '65 plate on a '85 car looks wrong and is another "please submit me to a routine check officer" look to it.

Good point, I never noticed it was the other way round. You could always get someone to bid it up for you if it gets some interest

talking of crazy plate valuations a family friend had his plate valued at £15k recently. not bad for a plate that his dad bought with a daimler conquest century new many years ago.

£80 transfer fee, which covers your plate off and the new plate transferred onto your car, which if you don't purchase a new 'private' plate will just be an age-related plate assigned by your local DVLA office. Which sounds perfect for you.
If you just want rid of your old plate, get onto some private plate websites, get a quote for buying it, and let them deal with it. Most of the time they'll just cover the transfer fee and maybe a few quid, as they'll want to make a profit on it. Note that if they've told you it's worth £400, you'll only get near that price if you let them put it on their books and sell it for you, whilst you're driving round with it. For them to buy it outright the price is a lot lower, many firms won't do it at all.
Also note the car must be MoT'ed for a plate to be transferred off it. This is how so many 'nice' old plates have died, once the car rots the plate is stuck there.

If its free money its worth having. I'm basically wanting somone else for me to pay to get an age related plate issued so it won't cost me £80.

car is taxed, tested, insured.
It has a 1965 plate on a 1985 car, which will look weird when it gets UK style plates. As its on US style plates at the moment you can't really tell is "wrong". But the US plates are technically illegal and also have silly slogans on them. If I am paying for new plates I might as well pay for UK style ones.
Only spazzers have "private plates" on their car so I want it off.
(unless you have a very cool private number like "FAT 1" in which case its allowed, but some random letters and numbers is ghey)

Sooner spend more on the car than plate myself. Mate has UVW200L which reads You VW Tool, pretty good if your into dubs, its on a Kharmann Ghia. Did online valuation and it offered £70 he declined the kind offer.

somehow i would think a merc owner would value MBZ 5262 at more than £200 but maybe i'm just silly!
my plates generally seem to look special lol, the F975 SML in small letters looks cool
best way anyway that i found is to offer it on a website or two that do them. they do a valuation but you are allowed to alter the amount asked before putting it up for sale...

I had a place do a valuation on a plate on one of my bikes that happens to have 911 as the number, apparently its worth £150 to the plate company...I only asked cos I thought about getting a plate to match the one on my low. Sad? Maybe, but hey, I do it cos I can

Don't get me wrong, "proper" plates can add something to a car, a finishing touch to a Mopar engined sit up and beg would be a plate asyig 440POP or on your Scorpio LOW1 or HOP5 or something. Yeah. But when you see a 1990s BMW 3 series running round with a 1977 S reg plate on it which doesn't say anything you have to wonder what the world is coming to...
AEW61C (which is actually what I think mine is) doesn't say anything to anyone. Perhaps the previous but one owner was Albert Edward Williamson but the thing is who's to know? And surely people knowing is te point of having it...
What really irks me is when you are trying to find out if some old hotrod or car from back in the day is still around, or maybe one of your own old cars, you run the number and it comes up as a 2002 Range Rover...
