what are these like? xj6the idea is four 6ft lads drive to europe at 100mph, and if it breaks down it gets burnt. so I'm aiming for sub £300. I'm aware that it probabally will breakdown. when it gets ho,e it ,ay well be destroyed. anyway, iir anything about these they're quite small. my dad had one and it regularly broke down. series 1/2/3my dads got a series 3 one of these. this also regularly breaks dowm a lot. it hasn't done for the last whatever months though, cause its been taken off road (the tyre went flat though). i really like these, and i'd have plenty of doner parts. xjsthese just look sex to me. when i was little (10) we use to regularly go out to fix one which had 666 in the reg plate. granted 2 people would have to go in another car but thats a small price to pay. ;D i reckon they'd all do 100mph, though possibly the series 3 wouldn't be that stable, i reckon at £300 they'd all develop some 'characteristics', and i reckon they'd all be pieces of s*it. any advice? this is just a potential holiday idea atm. ta.

They're all a minefield, anything from shagged suspension to braking problems and many, many electrical gremlins. And that's just the ones I've had go wrong on me... Just buy the best you can find and wing it, sounds like you've got the right attitude. What do you need us for? ;D Cracked out 800 miles in two days last summer with this, £150 odd quids worth of fuel as I recall. Great cruiser though. Cost £600 and is currently off the road with a failed master cylinder...

Take a look in PPC, there'sa buyers guide to the XJ40 in there. If it's got MOT then I suppose at least you don't have to worry about any looming rust holes so long as nothing's about to drop off!

Avoid the 2.9 like the clap.
Thats if they haven't all been scrapped by now.
Early ones are worst as I recall (1986-1990ish). They will also be the cheapest.

You wont get a lot for £300. You will get one for £300, but I doubt it`ll get anywhere near Continental Europe. An early `90s XJ6 or Sovereign thats basically sound but probably not too far off some mechanical expense and in immediate need of cosmetic attention but with a bit of tax and test will be £500 plus. Less than £300 will probably get you one of those Jag XJ6 garden sculptures that are becoming popular. No doubt there`ll be a bargain out there somewhere but they only tend to crop up when youre not after one.

No doubt there`ll be a bargain out there somewhere but they only tend to crop up when youre not after one. LOL thats so true! A mate of mine picked up a 1993 3.2 Sport off a chap who had it serviced by my mate. He'd taken it to the Jaguar main dealer to trade it in on a approved used Jag and they wouldn;t even take it as a trade in. So he asked my mate if he would give him £100 for it. The thing was very tidy. No rust (really) nice trim and paint and ran very well. The tax on it was worth about £70. But this is the same guy who bought an MGB which had been subject of a £12K body restoration for £1500.

cheap jags are a nightmare, be lucky to get one for £300 that will get you home let alone across europe, very nice cars when they are working, i love em.
if you want a luxury car cheap, better off with a granada cossie or a big vauxhall rather than a proper prestige make.
