The price this little baby sold for is truly unbelievable. Don't get me wrong I am very pleased to see that prices on these are going up but that was a truly unbelievable result. Click here for a supriseOver £7k for a car that the Practical Classics price guide values at £1k in C/D condition. This is definatly the best sale ive seen but prices have been very much on the rise recently with these cars. Which seems strange seeing as the classic car press are busy telling us that prices in general are falling. I must admit the car does appear to be in fantastic condition.

Unless I've missed it, the price it sold for isn't in that link. If it did sell for it's estimate then I'm pleased. If I had a bit of spare money then cars like this seem to be a great way of spending (or dare I say, investing) it - exhibit quality cars for money plenty of people are willing to spend on a boring daily? It's a no brainer.

It is exceptional, I doubt there's another one in the world like it. I suspect that's more likely to be the reason it's made such good money. Having said that, I'm sure values are creeping up for a lot of cars, that were previously "under the radar" and it's hard for magazines etc. to value these cars, it's not as if thousands of them are sold each week!
And a lot depends on who's got money in the pocket when a car like this sold, after all, not everyone wants a car like this, but if you do, you'll spend whatever you can afford. If I win the Eurolotto, watch the blip I'll make in certain cars values all by myself! ;D

I have seen cars in a similar condition to this sell for around £1200 which is normally absolutlely top money for any DAF. I must say this really did make my day as this particular car was one of the more common (if you can call any DAF common) models around being a late model 12v car.
Oh and check out this months classics magazine when it comes out it features a group of car people a few of whom are on here pulling together to restore a car for a worthy owner.
One thing seeing this has made me do is rearrange my garage, the DAF project is now going inside!

Which seems strange seeing as the classic car press are busy telling us that prices in general are falling. Not strange at all - the prices of the best examples of anything are continuing to rise: rich people are still rich, and are looking for investments. They might drive them or they might not. Either way, they only want the best and are willing to pay for that. OTOH, the normal man-on-the-street - who might buy a project or a 'usable' example of a car he's always wanted - has ever less disposable income with the result that prices for anything less than perfect are falling, or staying static.

I was actually in the auction room for this lot (waiting for the Mustang to come up - I didnt get it in the end: too rich for me!). The auctioneer took great delight in informing the room about the car's gearbox and how it could go backwards as fast it could go forwards!
I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of the best examples of this model, and as said above collector cars often go for well above their otherwise 'true' worth.

The auctioneer took great delight in informing the room about the car's gearbox and how it could go backwards as fast it could go forwards! He was right about that they can. The belts provide the final drive ratio which is what is altered. You have two fixed gears in the gearbox one for forwards and one for reverse. So when going backwards the belts just turn in the opposite direction and all the inputs that cause change up, Centrifugal force and manifold vaccuum are working the same as if it was going forwards.

Not strange at all - the prices of the best examples of anything are continuing to rise: rich people are still rich, and are looking for investments. This is certainly true... I'm by no means rich, but most savings and investment schemes are giving crappy returns. So I looked to the classic car market as a possibility, even the low end top cars are gaining money faster than I could afford to buy them! ... also I'd probably be too tempted to rag something speedy round a track and probably ruin its value... .... still those Merc Cosworth 190Es are very tempting...

I was surprised as well.
It looks a nice car, but certainly not 7x better than any other nice 33 out there. It is not even a rare variant like the 32s or a pickup. Both of them would be better candidates for 7k selling price in nice condition in my view.
Maybe it was bought by someone without a clue and who had missed out on an earlier bidding and didn't like to go home empty handed?

^ true but for it to get to that price there must have been more than one person bidding on it.

We're living in a world where, although you can still buy a perfectly useable one for less than two 'bags of sand', some people are asking £11k for immaculate 80's 2CV's so this is no great shock.
Immaculate examples of most cars will always fetch a hefty premuim for diehard collectors.

Not sure I agree with the prices falling, someone on Passionford is asking £60000 for a rs500 cossie. Although it is perfect.

They previewed that auction in this months' Practical Classics and they thought that the estimate was hugely over generous, just shows that a cracking example of any car can achieve good money! Which of course is great

its got 40,000 km on it, I could understand it if it had like 700km on and had sat in a showroom all its life, but it seems a mental price to me. Its in cracking nick but i could imagine theres an even better one out there somewhere. If this was ebay i'd say it was a couple of jokers bidding and expect to see it come round again in a few days, when it would make £1500 and actually get sold.

I would say it was probably the result of an over excited room and something of a heat of the moment bidding frenzy. It's no coincidence that the biggest prices made are usually at auction.
