I've never used them, but know a few people who have tried them and apparently they aren't much good at all, especially on stainless pipe.

You can buy pipe in various diameters and lengths from demon-tweeks that has flared ends already, I built my whole system for about 80 quid (I bought an extra bit of straight pipe i didn't end up using) plus a second hand back box. Not as cheap as totally DIY but the bits were delivered fast and it was quick and easy to put together, is larger diameter, sounds nicer and was 100 quid cheaper than buying a stock one, look for universal exhaust parts

If you want to open up an end that's been clamped then they'll just about do that.
If you're thinking of 'flaring' out the end to make a socket then forget it. No even close to being man enough

cut a small peice of pipe along its length, expand the slot slightly so it would fit over the rest of the pipe, clamp a peice of copper behind the slot in the expanded pipe and weld it up (the weld wont stick to the copper). remove the expanded and welded pipe, cut a couple or three slots an inch down the length (so that it will shrink in diameter when clamped in place). the weld the short peice of expanded pipe over the end of the normal exhaust pipe.
I know it sounds complicated, but its easy enough to do, and a couple of pictures would make it clearer, but I havnt got any

ive got one of those and yup they are not up to much, i had hoped to be able to heat the pipe up before i tried to expand it but that tool has rubber 'o' rings holding it all together and so would melt. i guess it works ok on small stuff but thats about it.

Been looking further at PROPER expanders. Don't think I can justify paying nearly £200 for one which gives you an idea how good a sub £20 Chinese set probably is. In fact found loads of web sites where people have tried to do what I intended and the Chinese tool simply broke or stripped treads.
