Here for sale is my 306, which makes a superb everyday car. Before I bought it I read about the excellent handling and I must say I'm inclined to agree. This one has the XUD diesel engine, which is a great workhorse. It had a cambelt at 140k so nothing to worry about there, it also has all the service stamps up to 140k with only 2 owners before myself (a lady who then gave it to her daughter). Since 140k there are various receipts and I serviced it myself when I bought it, with air filter, oil filter, fuel filter and an oil change at about 157k. There's a receipt for the service kit.
This engine is fitted with the Lucas pump, which is unfortunately not suitable for veg oil use. I have fitted a boost gauge for the purposes of adjusting the fuelling (and thus boost) on the engine: stock it is supposed to run around 14psi peak boost, it now runs around 17psi. The wastegate on the turbo has not been adjusted at all, the extra boost just comes as a result of the extra fuel. The adjustments made are to the boost compensator and the max fuel screw inside the pump, which is normally covered by a tamper-proof plastic plug. I have replaced this with a metal item which can be removed with a 14mm hex key, which I will include in the sale so that the new owner will easily be able to adjust the settings to suit their preferences. It goes nicely on boost and returns fairly good MPG if you keep it off boost - best of both worlds IMHO. The only issues with the engine are that the cold-start thermostat is stuck on, so I have slackened the cable so that it idles at the correct hot idle speed, rather than 1,200rpm. This does not cause any issues with cold starting. Also, the serpentine belt can squeak a little bit when on full lock.
The interior of the car is a nice place to be, it has (in no particular order):
-Half leather
-Electric front windows
-Electric mirrors
-Climate control - the dial has a position marked '21' and the fan has an auto setting, so I guess that counts?
-A/C - light comes on and it sounds like the compressor is working but it doesn't blow cold, saying 'probably needs a re-gas' is not helpful in the slightest but that's what I'd do if I was keeping the car.
-Stock 6 CD changer & head unit but with an AUX-in added in the glovebox, I'm really happy with how this turned out. Has steering column stalk controls and Infinity Reference speakers in the front doors with crossovers hidden behind the door cards, tweeters in the A-pillar trims and the woofers are fitted with Dynamat sound deadening. Looks completely standard but sounds rather nice.
-Rain-sensing wipers which work perfectly, great for intermittent drizzle.
Mechanically the car is very sound, it starts every time without a problem, boosts well and stops & steers like it should. There are a matching pair of Dextero tyres on the front and a matching pair of Pirellis on the back, with alloys in fairly good condition aside from a bit of kerbing to the rims. There are a few minor faults:
-The front brakes sometimes squeak very slightly when driving, which doesn't bother me and goes away as soon as any pressure is placed on the pedal. I'd imagine it's the anti-rattle springs but I haven't had time to investigate.
-There can be a knock from the rear suspension going over some bumps. There is no odd camber on the back wheels (indicating wear in the trailing arm bearings) and the only advisory on the MOT was a sticky brake load sensing valve, so it's probably some bushing or another. Again this hasn't bothered me and apparently it's common on 306s, but if you wanted to sort it out you could stick on a GTI6 rear beam which would give you rear disc brakes.
The bodywork is overall the weakest part of the car, it has suffered from laquer peel, the worst of which is on the bonnet. A replacement bonnet would be the easiest way to sort this, and diablo red is a very common colour for these cars. The roof also has laquer peel, but it doesn't look too bad and I think the car would look much more presentable with a new bonnet. In addition, most corners of the car have had a slight knock with resprays in some areas. The corners of the bumpers don't line up perfectly and the paint on them isn't great. It looks fine from a distance and polishes up quite well but it's certainly not perfect. There is also a fairly odd dent in the boot, which is small and hasn't broken the paint. All in all it sounds a lot worse than it is but there's no rust, it just looks a bit rough around the edges, despite being in good mechanical condition.

So, in summary, an excellent winter hack with plenty of toys that, for me anyway, ticks all the boxes for a reliable daily that shouldn't need anything doing in the foreseeable future. Reason for sale? I've bought something a little bit less sensible ;D
Give me a ring if you want to have a chat about it, my number is 07963 three two one 687
I'll definitely listen to offers and I'm happy to come to an agreement over the tax.
The car is parked 5 minutes away from Reading station so if you want to come and have a look it's pretty convenient.
