Evenin'... I'm soon to be purchasing a set of ATS Classics for my Mk1 Golf (7X13 on the front and 8X13 on the rear). I'm going for the phat/wide look with the tyres slightly stretched over the wheels (isn’t everyone..!) Can anyone suggest what size/profile/brand of tyres to buy to try and achieve the same 'look' as the cars below... The car is my daily driver and used to travel nearly 40 miles every day so ideally i'd like to have the 'stance' but also have the car hold the road a bit better than a waterbed in an oil slick... Cheers me dears...

Well for 7x13s 185/60s are easy enough to get a hold of if you go to the right place. I use different ones front and back on my Imp, which has 7x13 Wellers all round. To be honest they're not the best quality around, as I don't have the cash to spend a few grand on tyres at a time, and I can't remember the type of the fronts, but I think the backs are Ceats, which look nice and wide, and are slightly squared at the edges so they have a better footprint at the back, and the fronts have nice unidirectional tread and look great, but are the same type. They stick out the arches a bit on the Imp, so I need to get myself some nice flared arches, although first I'm goint to put spacers on the hubs to widen the track even more, the fronts are too wide really, and rub the arches on full lock. Be careful of that yourself, although I'm not sure what size the arches are inside on a Golf, but I'd imagine they're not much wider than an Imps really.

The proper Euro boys would use 175/50 on 13s and 195/45 on 14s.

Ha Ha - theres me in the first picture at the top (wearing the gimpy woolly hat ) I think Rmads correct with the 13" tyre size - the pea green golf was reviewed in the August issue of Performance VW - its tyre sizes should be listed in the Tech Spec - though it looks as though it has 8J wide wheels all round

I bow down to you Rmad...... the guru of anything wheel/tyre related The Derby wears 14s with 195 x 45 & seems to be a good compromise of looks v practicality, the tyres are Falken which were about £38 each, from Motech (which I thought was quite a reasonable price) However ATS don't do the Classic in a 14" size.......... For all things VW euro look see www.dubmeister.co.uk/

There's a good tyre size calculator to figure out how much your speedo will be out here... www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.htmlI love low profile tyres on fat alloys but unless you're REALLY careful (which I'm not ) the rims take a scraping after a while!
