Answer - Cheap wide wheels, that in lots of people's eyes look cool. I feel that your "FACT" might be opinions, steel wheels even banded one are often light than alloys wheels (less unsprung weight = better handling), wide tyres can be fitted which can increase levels of grip. Stretched tyres? ??

some peoples eyes yes, but most peoples - thats unlikely. Presumably they look good in the eyes of the people that have fitted them. Essentially what you're asking is why do some like things that you don't. The answer to that is, because some people like things that you don't.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

wider tyres=better acceleration and deceleration due to more contact patch along the width of the tyre? and the fact that some people like them and not most? iv got banded steelies on the MGB and the amount of people that comment on them is crazy i think someones jealous because he cant find some steelies with the right PCD for a TVR

everywhere I go I'm seeing more and more cars with banded steel wheels. its gone from being a silly vw fad and has now spread all about. whats the appeal though ? I honestly don't get it. they tend to look bloody awful (and thats before we even spot they usually have stupid stretched tyres on them - though thats a debate for another day) but worse still they affect a car adversely in so many different ways. handling ride acceleration braking all are affected and none in a good way. soooooooooo can anyone please explain to me why this is now so popular , especially when you look closer all it actually has is negatives? Assuming your only goal is a performance advantage, lighter wheels are better. That is your only point, even though you're hiding it amongst your opinion and incorrect historical knowledge. If you want to start an argument, find somewhere else. Retro Rides isn't interested. ps. Bountyhunter has had his account suspended for 20 days. Not because opinion isn't allowed, but because he should know how it works on here by now and because I'd rather not be wasting any more time on a deliberately provocative thread. Don't like banded steels? Fine. Don't have banded steels then.
