I'm going to be fitting a new back box to my W123 230E in a couple of weeks time.
Before I fit the box, is there anything I can do to pro-long its life?
Exhausts tend to rot from the inside out, so I guess coating a new box externally is a bit pointless?
Any ideas?

only thing i can suggest is alot of the cheaper copies don't have the original braces that factory exhaust have of then e.g a brace from the actual box onto the pipe to take strain away from the joint.
so they end up braking in no time at all due to an extra stress joint, i always add one on, stops them breaking after 2 months.

don't do short journies is the best way to keep an exhaust in one peace, if they don't get hot enough to evaporate any water inside it combines with the gas and makes acid which then attacks the steel allowing the rot to get going really quickly.
Thats mostly the reason the back box goes first, its the coolest part, if your worried fitting a stainless back box would fix the issue.

bit of zinc spray around the joins wont hurt it
as said decent long runs will make em last but thats not always possible
some folk drill a tiny hole at the lowest point to let the moisture drip out

I've bought a decent rear box - Imasaf Oberst, made in Italy. They make OEM for Fiat and Alfa Romeo, amongst other brands.
The first and now the second back box have both rotted out along the pipe just before the box section. I might pour some high-temp paint down the pipe just to give the metal a little extra protection.
Cheers guys.

With it being an OEM box I would say you are halfway there in all honesty.
Driving for long journeys help but even on cheap curse word it will barely do the warranty period despite this IME.
