I have a fairly rare steering wheel, that could do with recovering around the rim. The factory rubber/plastic has perished due to the age and over exposure to sunlight.
Would an upholsterer be able to refurb the wheel or do I need a specialist?

I dare say a competent upholsterer could do it. I suppose it depends on the person really. Does it have those hand-grip indentations in the original plastic? I think they would be hard to replicate. I think leather would be your best bet

Is it the plastic that's deteriorated or a covering? If it's a stiched covering then an upholsterer should be able to do it (I was quoted £60). If it cracked or crazed plastic then you best get down the bank and arrange another mortgage. I spoke to specialist about doing the one on my 312 Bluebird and the cost could be anywhere between £150 and £300!

Luckily for me it has no indentations like many modern wheels, so I guess thats one less worry. As for the wheel, it came from factroy with a vinyl /leather effect covering. So I guess, it could be recovered by a good upholsterer . Off to find one from yellow pages. Ed, its a 710SSS JDM steering wheel

One like this? Looks moulded Maybe just very well made. The upholsterer I spoke said it's one of his least favorite jobs so expect a PITA tax if it's a tricky one!

Ahem, thats the wheel ;D.
Perhaps I could get it recoverd without taking the "moulded" factory coverings. It will be interestting to see what happens around the area where the covering meets the spokes?

I really wouldn't mind gettng this Momo done in some fake leather or alcantara. Its propperly worn, no big deal for now. £60 is steep but half as much as a new wheel , does anyone actually specialise repairing em?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts
