Has anyone got some good suggestions!? Need to cut this tank (pictured below), the diesel fuel in the tank has been drained off as much as possible..but there is still an inch or so left. I could get my hacksaw out but that might take a while!!! ;D One option is to fill it with water then cut it - using a Plasma cutter, will it cut okay with water in the tank? It looks to be about 8ish mm thick.. Cheers!

9" grinder would be my tool of choice, its diesel so it won't light very easily at all, especially as it wont be under pressure/heat.

Diesel is suprisingly hard to ignite. Ive seen someone drop a lit match into a bowl of diesel and it just put the match out. To be honest I think you'd be safer with a grinder than a plasma cutter though much lower temperatures.

Can you drill a hole in one lower edge to drain off the rest of the diesel ? After all even an inch is probably going to be a couple of gallons in a tank that size.

Diesel needs a wick to burn atmospherically. As said you can extinguish a match in it. When I smoked I would regularly put a fag out in it. Cutting wheel would be preferred but plasma will do. Stop periodically to allow to cool.

is it diesel or fuel oil? seems a strange place to have a diesel tank, it also doesn't look like a diesel tank.

Sell it to a scrappy and let it be his problem to get it away?? Beat me to it! This might be worth more as a complete tank than as a pile of cut up scrap to be weighed in. Apologies if that's already been ruled out for some reason but my father in law's business is scrap metal and he often has to tell people that they've spent days cutting stuff up that was worth much more while complete.

I've personally cut up over a dozen of these! We used to strip out old factories prior to redevelopment.
As has been said, you will need to get as much of the fuel out as possible before doing anything. You may find there is still fuel that's clean enough for use in something still in there, but there will normally be quite a bit of water and sludge in there too. If you're weighing the tank in, it will need to be pretty much cleaned out or the scrappy might refuse it. We used to put the waste into 45gal drums and have it collected - wasn't that expensive.
With it emptied out, we would get in and cut all the internal bracing with oxy gear. It won't explode, but it does get a bit smokey! Don't do this unsupervised and have fire fighting gear on hand.
We then cut the tank into manageable chunks with the oxy gear. Cutting it up with disc cutters will take forever and you will have issues with the steel grabbing the blades all the time as it settles under its own weight.
You will find that it sets on fire at this point! If you are not worried about the smoke and heat issues, carry on cutting. If it is going to be an issue, have someone on hand to keep things damped down with a hose - just remember any water that goes into the tank will be contaminated and need disposing of in the correct manner.
They do get bloody hot if you just let them burn though and they can be pretty smokey, so be careful!
Joe
edit: just had another look at the pictures. It's not actually that big, so you will probably be able to cut all the bracing from outside. I'd knock the bunding wall down to just a couple of courses before doing any steel cutting - that should give you better access, but still allow you to contain any spills. Can't you get a truck round there to hiab it away in one piece? May be a quicker and considerably easier option!

If you can't get access for Hi-Ab what about knocking down wall and dragging it out with chain to a better position ?

If not leaking then it'd make a nice basis for a secure shed / storage. Sink into the ground for a basement storage with a shed on top ?

Thanks for all the advise! It used to be a coach base/garage and there was piping running round to the front of the building.. so pretty sure its Diesel. worth much more while complete. I'm going to contact my local scrappy and see what they'll give me for it..but I really don't know what it's worth?? Can't you get a truck round there to hiab it away in one piece? May be a quicker and considerably easier option! Cheers for the info, sound like you know what your on about.. I did think about oxy but was just concerned with igniting the Diesel - I've used some of the fuel to get fires going an it burns well.. I think getting a hiab would be best/easiest, its just a case of getting it out of there. Not the best of access, but then it was put in there at some point! Cheers

What about putting a jack under one end to get the rest of the fuel out - there could easily be 100 litre sloshing about in the bottom of there which is about well over £140 at todays prices - even if its cherry its worth $$$$
