I have just bought a new door for my VW golf, how many cans of top coat should i need? I think one large can of primer, but how many top coat if I want to do 2-3 coats?
Its a mid-grey at the moment and will be painting it black, it won't need clearcoat.

Depending on the type of paint, between one and three normal sized cans. If the paint on the door at the moment is OK you don't neccesarily need a primer, just go over it with 800 grit until it's perfect, degrease and whack your top coat on.
Halfords off the shelf cans are absolute dogshit, go for the custom mixed ones from halfords (or a proper refinishing suppliers.) With those cans (about £11 each) you might do the door in one, but I'd buy two just in case.
If you have to use off the shelf acrylic cans, definitely get two, they don't cover that well - the reds are especially terrible.

The donor door is in fine condition, so I think I'll take your advice and leave the primer and go straight to top coat, thanks.
Hopefully then it'll cost around £20. Yippee!!!!

Take the car with you to a decent paint supplier and get some rattle cans made up (they should match it to the car) Make sure you chuck enough on so you can flat and polish it up
