I've got a 1993 Chevy G20 van with the 4.3v6 (or 3/4 if you prefer...) engine and a 4L60E transmission.
Recently I've been having a few problems with the transmission - initially it started dropping out of 4th (or overdrive) and into 3rd. If I put my foot down a bit, it goes into OD/4th again no problem.
Then, a couple of days ago (and more worryingly) it seemed to lose drive in 2nd. A couple of minutes after starting driving, it stopped transmitting any power down, as though (in manual terms) the clutch had been pulled in. I pulled over, came to a stop, set off again and it was fine.
Any ideas what it could be? Fluid is not horrible and burnt although I have no idea when it was last changed. It has been dropping a little fluid, but the level on the stick is still ok.
Any help would be appreciated!
Cheers, Martin

I have no clue whatsoever what kind of automatic transmission this is, but I have had a similar experience;
I once borrowed a mates automatic suzuki alto for the day and halfway where I had to be, it started falling out of gear i.e. loosing all drive. Rolling to a stop, selecting a lower gear (forcing it into that gear) or letting go of the throttle and bury it directly afterwards made it react again and off we went. In this case it turned out to be a corroded fusebox, something these altos are known for apparently.
I realise a Suzuki Alto is not quite a Chevy G20 van, but perhaps you could start at the fuse/fusebox, especially the ones under the hood.
Of course if it's a mechanic automatic tranmission then this all doesn't apply, but then you could start by checking the vacuum lines going to and from the inlet/transmission.

It is an electronically controlled transmission so it gives me something to look at beyond the obvious, thanks!!

Probably obvious but you did check the fluid level with it hot and the engine running? I'de do a fluid and filter change before going much further, if nasty things are found in the sump at least you'll have an idea of what the problem was.
If it changes up when you give it a bootful isn't kickdown working the wrong way around, usually backing off the throttle when up to road speed makes them change up a gear?

Yeah, the kickdown thing is a little odd - it seems to defy conventional form. It is only when it drops out of overdrive though, in the lower gears it works as expected. There is both a cold and a hot level on the trans fluid dipstick, both are checked with the engine running, it's always worth stating the obvious just in case tho mate!

Just a bit of further info to see if it makes any sense to anyone....
First off, fluid seems fine. It is on my 'to do list' to change it, but I don't want to dump 11 litres (or whatever it takes) of fluid and a filter in, only to have to dump it again because it hasn't fixed the problem....
Took it out for a quick spin this evening after disconnecting the battery for a few days (actually stole it as I needed to move my Jeep....) and I established that the fault was exactly as before. Out of interest, whilst driving I dropped the column shifter to 2nd (as it had lost drive in the [D] or D positions and it worked fine.
So 2nd gear itself appears fine.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm off to Google....
