Thats pretty much how I work my turn signals TBH. However we're supposed to signal before we begin our manouver and changing down is part of a manouver, so... I hate those signals which you can't manually cancel. In most cars I have a habbit when changing lanes of "half flicking" the signal lever, so it puts the flashers on but it doesn't stay up/down without my fingers on it... You get a couple of flashes of the appropraite amber and I move out/in. Obv. I only do this when pass a car and theres nothing behind me, but its a habbit I have (check mirror is clear, half signal and pull out). Now with those modern silly thinhgs (late 1980s Jags have them as well) you end up signalling all over the bleedin place. Nightmare. Most modern cars have a half flick/full flick system. half click gives 3 flashes for changing lanes and full flick which stays on until you cancel it or it self cancels. Cripes they've thought of everything...

Mini: Indicator=Left; Wipers=Right glad u mentioned that dan cos mine are the other way round on my mini, they must of swapped them over at some point during production, mines a 1994 sprite. my friend had a 1984 mayfair and his were the same as yours, always puzzled me that Hmm... Thinking about it, my 84 Mayfair and 77 1000 had them on the left but my 78 Clubman had them on the right .... and am I the only one who finds the 'fake' noise that indicators make in new cars irritating? Really disconcerting at first too! No, your not alone! I cant stand them! Espesally Fords one! Do you remember them toys that were a ball cut in half made out of plastic and if you turned it inside out and put it down it would just up? It sounds like someone is constantly turning it inside out.

My Chevette is the right way round, indicators on the right, wipers on the left. The manta though just has wipers and indicators on one stalk on the left. There's no right stalk though, just more switches on the dash.

I remember some discussion in the (motoring?) press about the introduction of a new "world standard" which basically would be included under Type Approval which means it applies everywhere except USA and China. Anyway this new TA Standard wouldmake it a legal requirement for all new cars to have the same switchgear layout to prevent drivers from getting confused. IIRC the proposal was not just to put the indicator and horn in the same place on each car but all the switches etc. They also wanted to standardise the height of bumpers to minimise the cost of low speed impact repairs to insurers. Not sure if some or any of this got passed into regs or not. It was about 10 years ago. Smelt of a blend of a half decent idea wrapped up in a whole load of nanny state cotton wool though. The bumpers bit doesn't get through or how would big 4x4s and low slung sports cars get through? And switchgear still isn;t standard either.

now I'm just confused, doesnt make any sense to just move them for the clubby does it?? Nope, non at all. The Clubman was build under the BL name though and the rest under Austin and Rover if that makes a differance?

I agree with the "shift gears with the left, indicate with the right".
although the mazda has the strangest layout iv ever used. good once I got used to it but when I first got it, it seemed like there was too many buttons and knobs.
indicators on the right on a stalk, cruise control on the left on a stalk, lights on a seperate knob on the right, wipers on the left on a knob, another knob sticking out of the wipers knob to adjust intermittant speed, rear wiper knob above the front wiper knob, a knob on the right to "pop" the lights without turning the lights on.
i was very paranoid of flicking the cruise control instead of the indicators when i first got it. especially since iv never had cruise control before and had no idea how it worked.
my conclusion: theres too many knobs in rx7s ;D
reading through that again I couldnt help raise a smile with all the knobs ;D

my mk5 escort has indicators on right and a fancy wiper intermitent dial, at work i find most japanese cars indicators on the right, they`re mostly geared for the rhd market, i`m thinking this confusion has led to most drivers leaving their fog lights on all the time? i just wanted to mention the fog light thing really, annoys the hell out of me, am i getting old or is it really irritating?
