Not really an important question really but just wondering what side the wiper stalks/indicator stalks are on members cars. Switching between the Viva (Wipers on left) and Volvo (Wipers on right) has got me thinking about why older cars seem to have them on the different side from modern cars. Car makers settled on the three pedal manual gearbox arrangement fairly early on but not stalks??? I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels like a berk when you go to indicate and wash the windscreen instead or vice a versa

Toledo, Micra and 323 all have the indicators on the right, so i'm pressuming its a right hand drive thing? i.e cars from right hand drive countries get um one side and vica verca

It's more about what side your indicator stalk is.
Think about it... having it on the left is actually a really daft place on a RHD car
Before about 1975 everything for right hand drive markets had the indicator stalk on the right. Then the penny pinchers got involved. So now they are designed for the wider market (i.e. LHD) and we just have to make do.

Mine are on the right side.....on the right. As far as I was aware right was always the standard for British manufacturers, it was only compliance with the rest of Europe that caused it to switch to the left? What you've mentioned seems to contradict that somewhat but maybe a few manufacturers swapped at earlier/later points <edit> Christ, a lot of people replied while I was typing

All three of ours have the indicators on the right. On the left we have: Herald: Dip/Head/F.beam stalk (lights are turned on elsewhere) Sun-Tor: Gear lever Oxford: Nothing

:)The Rapid's also have a delightfully quaint row of "cooker knobs" too! The furthest right one lets you choose between three different intermittent wiper delay rates. Next left is the heated rear window and 2 speed fan, which annoyingly won't let you have the HRW and fast speed fan on at the same time! Skodas are full of quirks!

The escort has the indicators on the left, but conveniently the headlight flasher and horn are on the same stalk so I can hold down the horn and flash the lights at the same time...

Pog's answer seems the most logical Also whilst on the way home I was wondering why instead of "preset" intermittant wiper timing, why couldn't you have a rotary knob so you set the delay exactly right depending on how heavy it's raining ;D I get bored sometimes

IIRC i had similar on a LDV truck and a maestro.

my 95 micra has indicators on left and wipers on right, annoyingly to turn on wipers, you pull the stalk down, instead of up that baffled me for ages, the other annoying thing is the rear wiper is either on constantly or off... no intermittent, hence me replacing the wiper blade on the back twice and not needing to change the fronts yet!

Range Rover has indicator/horn/flashers on left, with another smaller stalk behind for the lights, and in between them are the jack plugs/switches for accessories (inspection lamp, CB, map light etc....it all works too, remarkable for 25 yr old Lucas gear ) On the right is the stalk for washers/wipers and again a smaller one behind it for rear fogs.

On the old Skodas the indicator flasher unit has a little screw where the flashers speed can be adjusted. Skoda Norman and I often laugh about this cos I've gone on about it so many times! ;D

Anglia, Mk1 Escort, Mk1 Cortina, my Pop (retrofitted) and dad's old 260 Merc all had indicators on the right. Makes more sense on that side if you ask me.
