Alex that looks lovely...Is it wrong to think that your car is flirting with me  I see some sensual revealing going on!!! I'm trying to figure your rear windows - Do they take two of the spring hinges per window? How is the rear opener attached? On my UK spec it affixes through a hole in the glass, with one spring hinge and another L shaped thing on the bottom. In the past I have used "JB Weld" (I think it was) to fix the hinge - using a stick between the hinge and the chrome springs to mind.. What product have you chosen as I will have to do this job also - one day! Also with the back windows; Have you thought of converting them to electric opening? I recall seeing a Datsun many years ago with them and thought it would be an ideal mod for the grannies  It is a shame that new profiled rubber is not available any more, but you have done a great job nonetheless Its good to see the new rubber accepts the chrome finisher. Has it cured enough to try it in the window aperture without the glass? Its difficult to advise what you should focus on next: Me, I guess I would try and stay put whilst I figured out the engine and box whilst I had use of equipment around me and less interior to ruin in the process I'm going to have another eggnog and go back to flirting..... The rear windows have a single hinge/opener at the back that screws to the car with two screws. The end of the hinge is simply a round base that is supposed to be glued to the glass. The front of the glass is fixed with one screw on the top edge and a clip in the middle of the b-pillar. That is all that holds it in. You've lost me when you talk about jb weld and the springs... Neat idea to make them electrical, but I wouldn't know how to do that. If you have any clue as to what datsun had that, it would be nice to look into! I love the idea! But now, onto the search for that elusive green tinted coupe windscreen... |

Damn. That's a real blow with the windscreen. I'm pretty sure you'll come up with a plan B, though.

No,no,no we'll not have you going into a new year feeling so glum - alternatives? Had a random recall (but quick google) and it would appear that a MK2 pre-facelift saloon should also fit the coupé. Sourcing one may not be so hard, a green tinted one maybe more so, but its something to pursue perhaps? Motomobil is in the region of €400 with bits added. Although it may be prudent to call them and see if they could confirm the dimensions of the MK2 Saloon/Estate front screen in comparison to yours - they are only one digit different in the store! May broaden the search if so... I see now: the two hinges in the pic threw me and the bit about the hole being in the later model ! I didn't pick up on the fact you were talking about the rear hinge/opener Keep in mind you have achieved much; don't let a single window spoil that! Happy New Year. |

Damn. That's a real blow with the windscreen. I'm pretty sure you'll come up with a plan B, though. Plan B will be tinting a standard clear windscreen with green foil... They carry up to a seven year warranty these days... |

Thanks Paul, best wishes to you and yours as well! I admit, I was feeling glum after the incident. But I've learned to not let these things get me down to a point it ain't healthy anymore. I'm bothered by it, but also realise that a solution will be found! I assume you mean a mk2 two door saloon? The coupe has a shorter screen and if it is shared at all it would be with the two door. Fact is though, I had a set of Mk1 and Mk2 two door sedan doors and both have different window frames (too high) than the coupe. That is why I had to cut and weld my new doors to fit the car (which btw I'm very proud of having pulled it off perfectly). So I really doubt that this screen is going to be interchangeable. But maybe your info is better than mine? Care to elaborate? I buy quite a bit with motomobil, but in this case shipping may be killing. I'll see about that. I'll also check with carglass, as the broken one was from them. If all else fails I'll tint a clear standard screen... Thanks, for reminding me, I did achieve a lot. Now to get it finished before april... |

Hi Alex, Maybe my old brain has go this wrong (likely) but I seem to recall it was the Mk2(s1) saloon - not 2 door variant - that shared the same glass profile. Apologises it this is incorrect, but in my defence its has been many years since I cross-referenced part# When I get an opportunity I will search my garage. I have one new screen and I was given another but am not convinced this is a MK1 screen - If the gods are smiling it will turn out to be a Mk1 green tint.... All the best. |

Apparently I have struck gold today.
I had a wanted add out on our most popular trade site and today I was offered a brand new coupe windscreen, tinted green for a very reasonable price! According to the seller it is in perfect condition.
I had it set aside immediately. It's sold locally to my brother's residence so as we have a meet scheduled next week anyway things seem to be aligning perfectly for a quick and cheap handover.
I'm pretty stoked right now!
Thruthfully I'd be a little more at ease when the screen is in my brother's posession, but sometimes you just have to trust people...
Tonight I'm over at the workshop to talk about how to repair my stupidity and moving the car to a different location (safer for the car as there won't be as many cars and people around).

I'm very happy with my new screen. I'm taking posession Saturday as my brother was kind enough to pick it up and will bring it to me when we meet for a planned afternoon of ice carting. So that worked out well. The screen is supposed to be nos.
In other news, I've started making lists again. As the car is nearing external completion. It should help get things done. I have a list for body and wheels, interior (quite long) and mechanical and engine (not too long just challenging!).
I ran into a snag last week when I had polished my sill trims and it turned out I have two for the right side of the car and none for the left. I traded my set of left and right for this set and neither the seller nor me noticed they were not a set after all. Fortunately my seller friend still has mine lying around, so I'll be able to swap one back. Now lets just hope it was a bit of a descent one. I traded them because mine were a bit more dented, although mine has slightly better chrome. Only issue is the distance, swapping them means a 400km drive...
I also tackled my rear side screens this week. I had a friend hold them in place while I adjusted the hinges to sit nice in relation to the window. I then taped the window and traced the outline of the part to be glued onto the tape. I then cut out the center so that black glass primer can be put on. This will help the adhesion of any glue as it stops uv light from deteriorating the glue itself. I Also marked the relative position of the hinge to the tape, so even away from the car I can glue them in the right position. This feels safer as the glue will have time to cure before the windows are actually mounted in position and any pressure is applied. The windows are under quite a bit of pressure with those new rubbers and I hope that the hinge will not come undone under that pressure. For safety I think a bit of tape will be used to hold the window at the back, should the hinge come off the glass. Ford really should have drilled these, like from 75 onward. Now it's just waiting on the glass guy to apply the primer and possibly advise on gluing or even glue the damned things himself.
I also had my grill painted, that now looks pretty stunning. Unfortunately the correct hardware for putting the chrome back on went missing so I have yet to mount it. I also repainted my Granada badge by hand. It now looks stock again.
So this week I'll try and finish up the exterior as much as possible.
I'm also working on additional wiring and where and how to route that and getting the floors ready for carpet. Still plenty of work to do in about two months!

Bad news about the screen - but the paint line is a simple fix.
You are very lucky if that is the only paint damage so far - it's pretty normal to have to fix a few chips when rebuilding a car.
Look on the bright side - the original screen wth the damaged area might have grown a crack in it in 6 months of driving anyway - at least it's fixed properly now when you were lucky enough to be able to get another.
In 6 months it might have gone..................

I agree with what you are saying. It was a temporary bummer, but it was not insurmountable (?). And I lucked out on a new screen for sure!
The paint fix, I'm not sure about how easy, sanding back to primer and respraying? Haven't yet been able to discuss that. The body shop is leaning towards filling with clear as it will be hidden under the window moulding. But I'm the type to do things right!

Filling with clear is good or you can just touch it in lightly with an artists brush and gently flat it back and polish. I've repaired many blemishes like this with invisible results.

Nice... But, my colour is not just grabber blue. It is a custom pearl version of grabber blue!! So it is absolutely one of a kind... |

I got my new windscreen and am working on creating a moudling for it so I can put it back in. I hope to have the reae sides in soon as well. Then it'll be mostly finished externally!! Thanks for the tip on the BMW but....For fold out windows? Granada MkI coupe windows open to the sides, they fold outward so to speak. Thought all modern cars had the windows sink into the car body.... Would be a really cool mod to get them to fold open and closed electrically! |
