Here's a challenge. I'm driving to Le Mans twice this summer, first to pick up Mrs Autohausdolby at the end of her year at uni in May then back again for the 24 a couple of weeks later.
I've been trying to decide what to do about transport, and it's always fun to look at cars for sale porn so how about suggestions for something to go in if I haven't got my Passat anymore and I don't go in my Polo.
The criteria are:
Test until July or beyond Budget of c.£300 Cool/wibblepoo/amusing Potential to actually reach France twice without blowing up Motorway capable

You want an utterly shagged old diesel estate Merc. Weld up the back windows, hack the springs to complete death and strip all the paint off (or set fire to the outside) so it goes nice and crusty.

How about my Celica This week only £200, needs a clutch and some electrical/exhaust problems fixing but It's getting broken this weekend if not, Excellant car when fully working, has been round france in my ownership so even knows the way ;D £££££££££s spent recently but not fit enough to get all the money back in one piece. Two new wings, new interior and new lowering kit. Will need different wheel nuts to have those wheels on permanently but I'll throw a set of TSW stealths on instead. Loads of room for other half removal duties as well (it's done that several times as well)

Alright, I admit to some bias. Also, I fear you'd be hard pressed to get such a nice example for £300. But it's so nice, I just had to... ;D Edit: Some day, I'll drag my Chamois over there for a good ragging, erm, leisurely drive down to Le Mans. "I'm"

Hmm. I vote you splurge the money on renting a classic Jag or drop-top something. Look the business, score brownie points off your missus, kudos points off every other driver, and have an experience that you may never sample otherwise.

Celica everyday, there's a whole bunch of car there for the money and plenty of time to fix it up. Loads of space and a good driver too... So you can have some fun on the back roads.
Either that or I'd go with Pog, it gives you a £150 budget for each trip to hire something. Got to be worth looking into if you're literally driving there and back?

granny cossie, easily buy one for £300 will do well over 30mpg on a long run, has 200bhp and will reach over 140 if you want it to, heated leather seats (air con, heated screen front and back, fule computer, cruise control, automatic, leccy everything, even the back seat moves on motors) that you can do 500 miles at a stretch on without noticing, can carry 5 and all the luggage with no bother, ONLY car I have ever had that allowed me to reach newquay without the woman wanting to stop to stretch her legs. easy to get bits for if it happens to die onroute AND when you get back you can fit the engine into lots of things. they look ok too, matt black the thing and it'd look mean as hell

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.
