I have a 1994 peugeot 205 1.8 n/a diesel, problem is that when turning corners the steering goes stiff then loose, where not talking about having to swing off of the wheel to get it to go round corners but it seems to go stiff in the same position every time. Any help greatly received.

The rack is less than 8 months old, genuine peugeot one as well.

I'd guess (first) at a binding top strut bearing - get someone to turn the steering lock to lock and watch the springs - if the top mount doesn't turn the spring will twist with the wheel causing lumpy feeling steering. If it seems hard to tell, jack the front of the car a bit and try again.
After that, I'd look at the steering column, and particularly any universal joints in it.

It's common on mk3 fiestas to get a stiff UJ causing this.
If you jack the front wheels all the way off the floor, spin the wheel and it's tight everyone/2 or full revolution with no relation to where the front wheels are pointing it's probably a UJ.

It will be one of the joints in the column, has happened on two of my 205's. The first needed a new joint (the one you can see near the bulkhead in the engine bay.
The other one just needed the column putting back together properly. there is a clamp in the footwell, loosen it push steering wheel "in", re tighten. It is more likely to be the joint though, I think the other one was caused by someone trying to steal the car (you can bypass the steering lock by loosening the pinch bolt and pulling the wheel towards you). It also caused the indicators to not self cancel as the tab on the wheel missed the switch, as it was out of line.

Ah Z old stiff UJ problem ! i half had a few A classes in with the same problem, i grab a large tin of grease, heat it on a camping stove then boil/soak the U/J in it for a few mins, makes em lovely and smooth after  |
