Quick question on the wood panels - you said you did Magnolia first then the colour. Was it both emulsion or gloss? If emulsion did it cover ok? Just wondering as emulsion is a lot cheaper and in better colours, and if we ever get the new place we're after there is a lot of very dark woodwork we need to update.

^^ Thats a metal cutting saw, not for fitting a wood blade to. Short of a chainsaw, the best bet for pallets and suchlike is a decent recip saw or an Alligator saw. If you can afford it, the best mitre chop saw has to be the Rage Evolution range ... cuts steel,Ali and wood with the same blade. Don't they're wibblepoo, try one out when you're in screwfix next time, even with everything locked up they still flex and the angles change so you can't get a repeatable cut. A friend bought one and took it back under the sale of goods its about as good as a £20 one from argos! Also to cut metal they spin a lot slower than a normal chopsaw 3000 rpm instead of 5000 rpm so you'll struggle to get a decent cut on wood anyway. For cutting metal (RSJ) i've got one of the older handheld rage saws and its excellent for cutting with no heat or sparks. If money is no problem buy Festool, otherwise in no particular order bosch, mikita, dewalt, hitachi are all decent for the money they cost. Honestly don't bother with the Evolution chopsaw unless its only for firewood that might have nails in it. |

Seemed a little too good to be true, one blade that cuts everything? Can't see how a wood blade that fits the above saw would be an issue? Both made Makita, both same fitment, does the motor really care what it's cutting into? Up to a point , yes it does, plus the blade fitments can differ,so just because it will physically fit, don't mean it'll stay on when you fire it up and start cutting. Plus its for 14 inch Abrasive blades, so centre bores can differ.Most manufacturers state they are only for cutting wood or metal. As to the 'One blade cuts all' well it does, very well, esp on the original Rage circ saw. ( i was a service tech for a national hire company, we used to hire them out ..... the blades were not cheap when they need replacing ......) Sorry for continuing the thread diversion. |

OK.... so the kitchen is completely wrapped up, so what next ?? Had a first interview for a job on Thursday, I hope they liked what they saw as I would love a second interview and would love the job as it is right up my alley with niche specialization. On Friday I decided to quickly give the guest bathroom a make over as Nicola has been hinting and I would like it lighter than it was. Started out with this.....  Inside.  Too much dark wood though and outdated tiles.  In all my years it never ceases to amaze me that people will paint and not remove furniture or mask off areas.  I decided to replace the very dated public toilet style 150x150 tiles with less dated 200x200 public toilet tiles..... the space is so small, so large tiles just would not work there.   On Friday night at 22.00 when Nicola went to bed, I started the first undercoat to cover over the dark wood,and also gave the copper pipes a first coat.  This morning I was awake by 04.00 , cuppa tea by 05.00 and up and painting and grouting by 06.00 By 08.00 the job was done and I made Nicola a second cuppa tea to wake up to...... Refitted the bathroom and we were out the house by 10.00 as she had to go to work to let someone visit his deceased wife for the last time.  Looking into the bathroom now.... nice and light, feels good being in there, the dark wood was always a bit clingy and closed in.  When we came back from shopping I light a massive fire to dry out the whole BBQ area as all the rain we have had recently has left everything quite damp. I ran all the tiles and rubble from the kitchen and bathroom tiling jobs up to the farm, to add to their road building rubble pile. Then back and started to cook our dinner on the coals.  In the mean time Nicola had started a fire indoors too.... By the time we had had our dinner, Harley made herself very comfortable in front of the fire.  I will now try to do nothing for a day or two. |

Very productive you don't hang about. Or need sleep it seems.
Agree with the 'why not take it off to paint' moan. It's generally more effort to try and cut in around stuff than break out a screwdriver and just take it down!
My mate spent literally 2 hours masking up his pretty small bathroom prior to painting. He did a rubbish job or used cheap tape as it still went everywhere and bled. Then before finishing he knocked the half full tin and covered the toilet, floor and hall carpet....

tbh i can't believe you moaned above masking off stuff before painting over copper pipe. i had a 4" waste pipe which ran through my bathroom in my old house, which i stripped of horrible gloss then gave a good rub with wire wool till it shone. everyone who saw it commented on how nice it looked.

Did not get the one and really did not want it, but lost out on a second one I really wanted as I did not have enough specific commercial experience. Still, stressed as I am, I do trust something will come along. In the mean time. We have three cats and they tend to bring the meeces in for us to play with. With the new kitchen done, Nicola has created a dummy corner in the hope they will flee there so that we can round them up there.  Time will tell if her plan succeeds. One of the cats was sitting there staring at the "hole" this morning. |

Been a while, and I had started relaxing a bit, thinking all the odd jobs around the house were done. WRONG !!!!! Last week my lovely wife started making noises that she wanted to change the "look" of the porch ( It is a porch !! ) We keep all our extra cold drinks in there, and she has a 6 drawer cabinet type thing with weaved baskets that her candles, greetings cards, stationary, sweets, and who knows what else live in. There is a large brass "umbrella stand" or old rubbish bin, which houses my mad collection of home made and bought walking sticks etc. And a rather nice coat hook rack and mirror type thing in dark wood. The colour was light, with an aged wallpaper border...... but it was clean and tidy. So she wanted to change the colour to something "WARM" and change all the furniture in there to dark wood. First up was an orange colour...... the same as what is behind out masks on the stairwell..... well, what baby wants, baby gets ehhh? But I kept on asking if she was sure it was what she wanted, until she reailzed it was not right.  Thankfully she agreed that if she wanted a new border as well, the orange may be a bit too warm. She then started looking for a border that represents our quirky mad tastes and discovered American wallpaper borders...... Then she discovered Charles Wysocki. So a border was bought, this is the style.  Now the colour changed to "picnic basket" which is the same colour I used to paint the kitchen and utility room panels when I did them. So once the old border was removed, it left me with this.  Halfway there, still needed to dry some more.  Better  As part of the change, and in keeping with the theme, we stopped at a house clearance shop on the way home on Friday afternoon, and picked up this 50's unit, which would be perfect storage for the porch. I love the feet on it. Paid £15.00 for it, and it came with a nice old vintage tin in the bottom drawer.  Of course this now had to be DARK wood, which it clearly was not. So off to the shed, removed all the handles, sanded it all down with a fine grit paper, and varnished with a dark colour. Leaving it in the shed overnight to dry, and harden with a heater on.   In the mean time Tabitha, the old girl had chosen one of the weaved drawers for herself..... they were going to Nicola's daughter to use in her kitchen as extra storage in her new flat.  Inside, done, happy.....  DONE !!  Lets see what the future holds.... Next job ? |

Wallpaper border came in the post, via Ebay "make an offer" purchase. We do not like wallpaper, but there are tracks where the wall was painted over wallpaper before, and anyone that knows, will know that the only way to get the marks gone is sand down to the base, or plaster, as the tracks always come back, so we will be fitting a border over the marks..... the only wallpaper in our house, thankfully.  Really interesting.... on Photobucket, the pic shows up as vertical, then I edit it to make it horizontal, post it above and it lands vertical again WTF ?? Then I uploaded it again, and have just grabbed the IMG tags as uploaded, lets see what it does this time.....  Next trick is to get it stuck up on the wall, it is pre-glued.... any advice gladly accepted. |
