Morning all A friend and I were working on mending my '71 VW bay yesterday, which included various power tools (angle grinder and electric jigsaws). It currently has no roof At about 10 to 5 (having been working for about 2 hours on and off using the power tools) I had an old man from 4 doors down (semi detached housing so quite far away too) come and have a huge rant at me, including threats of telephoning the council, etc etc. My next-door neighbour had just come home mid-way through the rant, and when the old man had left, called him a curse word and told us we weren't being overly noisy. So it bothers someone 4 doors down, yet not the next door neighbours. Can anyone will me in on the regulations on how much noise I can make, how often etc? I don't want to annoy the bloke more (much!) but I'd like to know he can't really do anything to stop me working on the van. As it is, yesterday was the first day in 2 months I've done any work on the van anyway  Thanks Oh, and of the seven houses down the road from me, he is one of only two of them who have not ever been friendly enough to say hello or stop and have a conversation with.

I don't think there's much specifically for noise regulations other than the usual time limitations, however if the council wanted to be strict they could ban you from working on your car in the road altogether! I know Cappuchinocruiser had a load of beef with this, i think it turned out you have to work on private land and not be visible from the road, and one car at a time or something.

I think for legal purposes what constitutes 'unreasonable hours' is anything between 11:30pm and 7am....outside of those times you're pretty much free to do as much work as you want, provided you're not running a business. Some councils take a dim view of working in the road but if youre on your own property, and you're not doing it every day, he wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Having worked for a local council about 18 months ago, I'd say your best bet would be to speak to your local anti-social behaviour unit. Talk to them first, ask them very politely what you should be doing and possibly complain about your neighbour being abusive and threatening. That way, if (or when) he does choose to make it official, they'll already have heard your side of it and will know that you are reasonable....

Cheers guys Pillock/Briandamaged - the van is in my garage which is attached to my house. It was curse word it down with rain so working outside would have been not such an attractive idea. He asked me "do you think you're running some kind of cottage industry?", but when replacing whole roofs on VW campervans becomes profitable, I still won't be queueing up to do it again Graham, if I have any problems with him again I will phone the anti-social behaviour unit. I am careful never to work too early in the morning, or at night. I normally pack away by 6PM at the very latest. Cheers for the advice

A similar thing happened to me a few years ago except it was a neighbour who was fine with me working on my car and then complained to the council who then sent me a letter stating there had been a noise complaint. I rang the council and they were very helpful and said it was just a standard letter and not to worry. To prove I was a noise nuisance they would have to monitor me for at least 3 months and record the duration and volume of any noise I made. I only ever work for an hour or two at a time and rarely after 6pm so no further action was taken and thankfully the neighbour moved out a year later.

Graham Seems like great advice to me, any complaint often takes a long time to come to any sort of fruition and as you seem to be a thoroughly decent and considerate chap I'm sure it won't come to that. I've only ever reacted to a couple of issues in a way similar to Graham's advice. Just cover your bases by finding any relevant limitations or restrictions and remain reasonable, it'll be fine...

Bloody lawn mowers etc at 8am specially a fuggin sunday Its not really fair is it. if its a fair time of day and minimal noise you can make, there should not be a prob. I used to be cautious chiseling pointing from walls at 8am on a weekday while students were asleep in the customers house, but bizarrely people accept a job has to be done. hammering and cutting cars in a garage isnt somehow??? its mad!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I am blessed with neighbours who don't even complain when I'm outside with the angle grinder at 10pm, infact 2 of the 3 of them are actually interested in what I get upto! The other one has complained previously, but likes to start garden fires within 5 metres of our gas tank , so never makes a formal complaint

You're not allowed to have fires on the ground, any waste burning needs to be done in an incinarator. Big fine for setting fire to stuff without it being raised from ground level!

Didnt know about no fires on the ground rule! Getting back to the threaed ...I s'pose I'm lucky having no neighbours at all.Apart from the noise nuisance upsetting your next door neighbours ,theres also the fact youre generally under scrutiny when you do foolish (in their eyes)things like playing with cars . don't forget a lot of people nowadays don't fix cars at all,and just take them to a garage .,and they're looking for any excuse to have a pop at you!

When I was rebuilding the Dyane a few years ago - from the previously replaced galvo chassis up - our new neighbours had only just moved in. I tried my best to be considerate, but the bloke came round anyway... and spent the next four hours helping me sort out an electrical problem!

Cheers for the advice all ;D Chaseracer, that sounds like a good result. I'm quite lucky, because 2 doors down own a fiat 500, and 5 doors down have 2 VW bay window vans. I will continue to work on the cars, keeping noise levels low (as I always have) and if the guy comes and complains again he may get a piece of my mind. Politely put, and probably over a cup of tea if he cares to come in for one.
