Fantastic to drive, really fast and handle well, sound nice as 5cyl engines always do, but high maintenance from what I can gather, to really keep one sweet £1000 in a year on maintenance isnt unusual.
Normal 850 estates are very well rated and still handle and go very well, if youre not into big bills one of these might be worth considering.

my mate had an 850t5, the non-R. still amazingly quick, had a chip but only mild. you can get them for 600 quid or so but you definately get what you pay for, grand upwards will cost less in the long run. oh and high teens is normal for mpg!

The fuzz ones had all the relays for strobe lights and so on left in them when they were flogged on. Just switches removed Not that I am promoting the impersenating of a police officer on a dark emptyish motorway, not at all, ever.

Get yourself a Volvo 940/960. Go for a 2.0 or 2.3 HPTurbo in a 940 estate, or a 960 3.0 24v (200bhp as standard).
Rear wheel drive, cheaper to buy, MUCH cheaper to run, much easier to work on than an 850. Turbo's capable of fairly simple mods for quite big power.

I've been doing some research on these cos the wife and I are thinking about an estate car and I remember the touring car days when the Volvo estates used to win. The T5R seems like a good car but it's front wheel drive. I think there were two versions. The first was good but suffered from massive front wheel drive wheelspin and torque steer. The second one was also good and added more power. All the road tests I found said FWD was a mistake with that much power. The more recent T5 variant is the V70R - it's a £38k estate car that goes like the clappers but it's 4WD. Most models seem to have loads of options like leather, air con, multi CD systems, 10 speakers, etc. £4.5k gets a good one. Less than 100k miles is good. Full service history is vital cos it's a costly experience if they haven't been maintained well. Insurance costs a fortune. Website: www.v70r.comPics: (thanks twincammy) Charlie

Yeah obviously the AWD is the one to go for but that's only available on the V70 isn't it? Still they're getting awful good value for the ammount of car you get.

I've got one! Good points: Almost everything! Comfort, safety, space, SPEED, quality, hi-spec. Bad points: , FWD, Fuel economy (I get between 20-25 mpg normally including lots of London traffic and 30mpg on a clear M-way run). I paid £1000 for mine - it's got full leather, climate control, alloys, trip computer, heated front seats, cruise control, 220+bhp, 7 seats blah, blah. Mine's an auto, but that was my criteria anyway...finding a manual would be a bit harder. If you think you can live with the economy then it's a fantastic car, especially at their current price. If you've got more in your budget then a V70 D5 solves the economy issue without too much of a performance trade off apparently.

I've never rated the front wheel drive 'experience' on T5's, but that's just personal experience. I'd go tweaked 7/9 series anyday, everytime I wanted to have some fun it would just break traction. Consequently it ate a set of front tyres in three months and about 4K... Oh, and the turning circle was shocking compared to what I was used too. Other than that, just check the service history. If it's been tweaked and badly maintained, watch out for blown crank case oil seals. Expensive to fix.
