Evening all.
Got a problem with my Jetta. The idle is running really rough, its up and down constantly and keeps cutting out.
The next problem is when you try to restart it, well... it wont. If you attach a battery pack on though it will.
I'm gussing the idle is down to adjusting the screw on the carb. But I'm not sure about the starting problem. Is it likely to be the altonator not charging or something else?
Dan.

sounds battery to me - what happens if you take the battery off while its running? if it works fine without the battery its the battery, if it cuts out then its the alternator on the subject of jettas - my friends friends jetta from ay merika

Which engine does your Jetta have? I assume the carb will have an idle solenoid that needs a 12 volt feed. The carb needs to be earthed due to being rubber mounted. Does the alternator warning lamp work with the ignition switched on and go out when engine is started? Sounds to me like the battery is either faulty or not being charged. I would be looking at the wiring at the rear of the engine bay and up to the carb. Also check the rubber carb mounting for splits and any vacuum pipes. Loads to look at, but difficult without seeing the car!

"what happens if you take the battery off while its running?" Never do that!! You'll probably destroy the alternater doing that which would be a shame if it was OK!

It is a 1990 1.6 Pierberg carb engine.
Which light it the altonator warning light? When you put the starter to position 2 the oil flashes but everything else is stays off.

I think you've partly found your starting fault. There should be 2 warning lamps ....the flashing oil lamp as you mentioned, and the alternater charge lamp...which will have a pic of a battery.

Sorry, I assumed the battery light was the battery, not the altonator Ah... The battery one stays on when its in position 2. I just assumed it was normal.

:)OK...so does it come on with key in position 2 and go out after the engine has started? I seem to remember that amongst the wiring near the inlet manifold is a connection for the battery/alternater light? Perhaps 1 of the V dub experts on here will remind me!

^ Yep, thats right.
Been out in it since and it was running alright apart from the idle. All that changed was the driver. I give it a little more of the loud pedel than my partner does, well, she only passed her test on the 14th.

Idle may well be the rubber carb mounting that has perished. A new one is about £20 from GSF.

Mine was doing the same, turns out it was my fuel that was contaminated! The result of it sitting up for 12 months with no fuel sender unit in the tank i suppose
