A little story .
I sold a Ford Di fuel pump which I took off a perfectly good 52 plate that came in the yard for parts only . The engine ran perfectly and having sold 3 pumps each for £100 I spent some time taking this one off .
The item sold for 110 almost 3 weeks ago I sent it out all boxed up . VIA collect plus ..
2 weeks later I got a message telling me it was broken ? Then another telling me it was fitted to the car ? And did not work because it was broken at the plug . With photo showing it was fitted and now broken .
Now the buyer has opened a case wanting a full refund ? EBay has suspended my paypal account Then I got a message tell me to refund within 3 days ?
A - the buyer didn't contact me to say it was broken on delivery ! But waited to fit the pump first ? B - the seller said it arrived not in a box but loose ? C - has any one on ere ever known a garage that would fit a knowingly broke item taking hrs inc a new belt kit . To see if it would work ?
Or does it sound like his mate has fitted the pump and broken it while doing so ... ? ?
Now he wants a full refund ... work that out

Gumtree is owned and run by eBay.
Remove all funds from your PayPal account and close your ebay account. Then re-open another account using a new e-mail address.

don't bother mate, I sold my e28..... 3 months later paypal send me a message .... I lost out on my e28 and my £500. Surely in that case PayPal are the ones to lose out - they credited you with an unauthorized payment - not your fault. As soon as they have OK'd the payment then it's them being defrauded, not you. I'd be onto their legal team and citizens advice sharpish..... You released a vehicle (or whatever) on THEIR authority of receiving a 'good' payment, making them wholly liable. No way on earth you are to lose out because they screwed up. Or am I completely off the ball here? I'd be onto the bay too for the pump - even the laziest of helpdesk jockeys will know you can't send a pump 'loose' - it has to be packaged..... that and the time delay, fitting THEN complaining shows enough to swing it your way. As above though - if they really are pushing to keep it for the big boys then they probably won't give a rats *ss........ I haven't ever sold on the bay, I just don't trust them at all... and here's another reason why! Best of luck - keep us posted.

Turned out they had there account cloned and had a few other people do the same thing! Police said that beings I handed him the keys they won't do anything, as it's only a dispute over ownership!?!?

I'd be onto the bay too for the pump - even the laziest of helpdesk jockeys will know you can't send a pump 'loose' - it has to be packaged..... that and the time delay, fitting THEN complaining shows enough to swing it your way. I use eBay loads and have had this more times than I care to remember. It's not put me off but it's made me change how I do things. If you used a courier, try and get a note or email from them saying that they wouldn't have picked up a loose pump, it must've been packaged correctly to comply with their terms and conditions. That's worked for me a couple of times, it makes the complainant appear to be a liar and they'll usually side with you at that point. If you have the messages from the boy saying first that it's broken and later than he fitted it, I think you might be able to cast enough doubt on his story that they'll split the difference but it'll still cost you half the value of the transaction. Honestly, with this being the first time it's happened, you might just need to write it off and accept that you've been done over by someone who knows how to take advantage of the system.

eBay is full off chancers and knobends.. I sold a laptop for spares or repair stating that I never knew what the problem with it was. the boy that won it then sent me a message saying the motherboard was fried and that he wanted half his money back!! I told him that as far as I was concerned it was as described IE spares or repair and fault unknown!! he then opened up a dispute and eBay sided with him and ordered me to give him a full refund.. he then sent me a message saying he could use it for spares or put a new motherboard in it and only wants half his money back so I forwarded this onto paypal and explained that now the boy was admitting that it was useful as spares or repairs so as this was the way it was advertised surely I was correct..
eBay then went ahead and refunded him half his cash and told me to sod off.. I later found out that the boy had also done the same scam with other sellers who had also complained but yet he still gets away with it..

yea, with pretty much anything i sell over 20 quid in value on ebay (and very often on forums too) I insist of a face to face cash transaction that way the buyer leaves having inspected the item before handing over the money, and theres no electronic scam for people to take money back off you

e-Bay are bad news. Try getting some professional advice. Some solicitors will give you a half hour free. See if you can find one who is willing to take the case up for you against the buyer not e-Bay. If he is the typical e-Bay knob head a letter from a solicitor may just get him off your back. And get him to drop the dispute against you with Paypal/e-Bay.

Next chapter
EBay sent me an email this morning they have found in the buyers favor .. I'm to send him a full refund . So I've just spent time on the phone to eBay again .. Now they see my point but can't change the decision . I'm to wait until he has sent the pump back and he gets the refund Take photos . Send both sets of photos back to eBay who will reopen the case They can't appeal until the first case is closed . But they should find in my favor after that .. fingers crossed ..

maybe the pump does not arrive back with you, ever. Then buyer will not get a refund.

I nearly got caught out by this. Sold a Golf GTi, a week or so later got a message from Paypal saying the payment had bounced and my account was now £500 in debt. Thankfully, the buyer was honest a re sent the payment, although only after mutterings of legal action. So never, ever, accept Paypal for a car. Or for anything that the buyer collects in person, since they could claim it was posted and didn't arrive
