Hi i am going to be taking my mk1 shell back to bare metal inside outside and underneath. My question is what do i use as I'm going along. I will eventually be wanting to use the car in most weathers. Not all the time but i don't want to be scared to use it in rain snow or shine. Is zinc primer acceptable and can it be over paintable. Etch primer? Does this stop rust? I will be stone chipping and body colouring underneath etc. Whats the best course of action? Cheers

I too would like to know. My current thoughts are Etch primer, then Zinc Primer (which you can paint over), then colour. I'm trying to pick up bits of knowledge from various threads and guides but everyone has a different opinion

I used etch primer on any bare metal during the shell preparation
Then underneath bare metal, POR15 marine clean and metal ready, POR15 paint, 3M hard-drying stonechip, primer, then 2pack paint in body colour
Seems to have lasted most weathers and 12,000 miles over a year and a half pretty well so far!

Olly - what are you using to strip the paint from your shell? I'm planning something similar with my mk2 .

So far doing my arches etc ive been using a wire brush on my grinder. Takes it right down but i wont be using it in big panels or hard to reach bits. Ive also got this black paint remover bit for it as well. Will probably try paint stripper too.
