...to be seen getting down and dirty here on the Tour of Mull rally. Maybe old rally cars go to Scotland to die. If you can hang in there until car 145, it's a rare one!! ;D www.2300club.org/gallery/03_aml.html

The Tour of Mull is a great rally. Worth all the effort arranging accomodation and travel, I guarentee a great weekend. Have been for the last 3 years, we were supposed to be competing this year but the car isn't ready and I can't afford to go because Nationwide have just stolen our first massive mortgage payment. This time next year Rodders...

The Tour of Mull has been on my 'essential things to do' list for over ten years... One day I'll actually get up to Scotland and watch it!

Nice that the Imp derivatives were represented, this is a Clan Crusader for those of you who aren't Imp oriented, which is normally fitted with an Imp engine. Shame there were no actual Imps, mine still isn't finished or I'd be right in there!! I can tell you that most of the classic rally cars in Scotland seem to be rear wheel drive Escorts for some reason, a lot of the rallies I've ever been to have had at least 15 Escorts at them! No kidding!

Well the Tour of Mull isn't marketed as a classic rally but as you say, it gets a good 50% of the entries which are classic (or at least retro). Its great to see MK2 Scorts mixing it with Lancer Evos, and usually doing better. Although local knowledge of Mull is the deciding factor. Callum Duffy is the most succesful driver in his Mk2 (which probably has as much development as any of the Lancers) 2 years ago, the best quote I heard was from his co-driver saying that when the shift light started to glow in 6th, he knew they wer doing pretty well!! ;D Absolutely stunning when you consider the terrain!! Anyway I feel cross now as I had put Mull to the back of my mind as I can't make it! There were two Peugeot 104s doing it the year before last - they are locals I think.

Car 145 (the yellow ZS) is Chris Baker, a local. Haven't seen any pics of the other 104, his daughter rally's a Samba Rallye so they are a loyal Peugeot Talbot family. Interestingly, the man who bought my old Samba Rallye re-sold it on ebay last week to...Chris Baker, small world! Must be a laugh to be in a 20 year old escort or mini and post better times than some guy with deep pockets and a scooby or evo!!

I've never done it in a rally, but don't you just love blowing modern cars away on quiet roads when they come up looking for a race? The other day I obliterated an X3 on a backroad in the Imp as surprising as that sounds, because he was putting far too much speed on and having to wipe it off again in corners, trying to race me, and as any Imp owner will tell you Imps can get through corners without slowing down on many occasions, so the 3 litre toting curse word who tried to catch up with me didn't know what hit him. When I finally change that engine I'm going looking for V8s! ;D ;D ;D

;D That's ALWAYS fun, especially for some reason modern BMW drivers. Came back from Chippenham the other day behind a tricked up 323i. When he saw I was right behind him he started to pile it on, OK on the longer straights he was gone but by Cirencester I was still right behind him. (OK I might put a bit of this down to him having no idea how fast his car could corner rather than a 24 year old 1.3 peugeot actually being faster than his car!) but it sure was fun!

The reason you don't have to slow down for corners in an Imp is that it cant go that fast in the first place

There's a Clan Crusader sat in someones front garden near where I live. It's not moved in a very6 long time. I'll snap a pic of it when I'm going by that way next.

The reason you don't have to slow down for corners in an Imp is that it cant go that fast in the first place Come on, a standard one can go as high as 80 something in some bends easy, and mine has wide wheels and tyres, and is lighter than most Imps, so it holds itself well in corners, plus I have the strombergs on it instead of a solex, so power is a bit up, whearas the BMW driver was scrambling around and trying to speed up to pass me, only to have to screech to a halt in corners when he nearly left the road going too fast! ;D ;D ;D Oh I don't doubt that had I been on the M8 going Glasgow-Edinburgh or another straight local road then he'd have left me behind, but the point is that nothing touches a rear engined car in corners, and I know what my car can do, he either didn't push the car hard enough to start with in corners, or tried too hard an nearly landed in a ditch at points!! ;D ;D ;D

but the point is that nothing touches a rear engined car in corners, Not true at all. Engine location is fairly irrelevant to outright cornering power. It does affect moment of inertia however, and in that respect a rear engined car has no advantage over a front engined one. More important in the cornering game is balance and outright grip, aided by light wieght. To illustrate the point, on Monday I had my 510 out at Cadwell Park. I could out corner most of the cars there with the exception of a couple of bike engined Westfields. Lotus Elises with a similar power to wieght ratio to my car cannot corner anywhere near as fast, despite being mid engined. Even a track prepped Ferrari 355 couldn't shake the 510 through the twisty bits ;D (although it was somewhat faster on the straights!) The fact is, it's easier to get a light car round a corner than a heavy one regardless of where the engine is. If rear engined cars ruled the bends we all be doing trackdays in souped up Beetles ;D

Stripped out Imps with just happen to weigh just over half a ton as well, so there's no problem there! I know when you get into the physics of it there shouldn't be an advantage, but it means that the Imp has great traction and very light and responsive steering, plus you can get the tail out on demand if neccesary. Part of an Imp's cornering ability is no doubt due to the good suspension design though. It's not especially adventurous compared to modern cars but it is effective in a small light car.
