right. i need to apply for a new v5 for the mazda. the previous owner lost it when moving houses and applied for a new one. it hadnt arrived when i picked the car up but i left my address and he filled in his part and posted it to me when it arrived. now it seems its either been lost in the post or my handwriting was awful when i wrote down my address.
so how would i go about applying for a new one?
i know all this sounds really dodgy but the guy seems quite trustworthy and has kept in contact after the sale and helped me out with advice etc.

Yep it's form V62, if you go here you can download a copy of it, or any Post Office that does car tax should have a copy.

cool, cheers. i read a little about it from the dvla website but they have a habit of making everything sound confusing.
does it make any difference that the car is still registered to him? iv got a reciept to prove he sold it to me with his signature on it.

No, if you send in the receipt of sale/transfer they will do it. No questions asked

By all means send in the receipt of sale, but to be honest I`ve had to do it the odd time, when its a part exchange of little value and the person has lost the V5 for it, for example, and I just fill in the V62 with my own details, put in the cheque for £19 and 4/5 weeks later the V5 arrives, I`ve never bothered enclosing any proof of ownership, the reason it takes 4/5 weeks instead of 2/3 is because they automatically write to the previous owner informing them that someone else has applied for a V5 for the car. If they don't hear anything after 2 weeks they automatically issue the V5 to the new owner as requested.
I suppose in theory if the previous owner instantly wrote back saying "Yes thats fine, issue the log book" then you might get it quicker but the DVLA don't need to be any more confused than they already are so its best if the prrevious owner just ignores the letter like everyone else.
I`ve never had any problems doing it this way, the only time you get problems is if the buyer has dicked the seller around, still owes them for the car or something. You wont have a problem.

I had to apply for a V5 for my Nissan Caravan when i got it. The previous owner had taken to my local Nissan dealer as the engine had blown up while they were up here on holiday. Once presented with the bill for the engine inspection and estimate for repair they decided they didn't want to pay up. The van sat there for a year after which the dealership called me and asked me if I wanted it. As "free" is the kind of price I like, I went and got it I was a bit wary that the PO might not be too impressed when they got a DVLA letter advising them of my V5 application but regardless, 5 weeks later the fresh V5 arrived and all was well. I've done this several times and have never had any kind of problem getting a V5.

ok thanks all! i shall go along to the post oriface and get it sorted once they're open again. I'm pretty sure the previous owner wants to sort this out pronto since any speeding tickets i get will go straight to him!

I had something similar with the white Rapid. There is a form you can download off their website (cant remember which) that i printed that out and sent a photocopy of the V5 slip bit that I had and then about two weeks later I got a new V5 with it registered in my (dad's) name.
Didn't get charged for it either.

i don't think you get charged if your just after a replacement. or if your just changing some details. or something! theres certain conditions that mean you can get away without paying. i forget what they are though!

see I'm not sure if i do need to send payment now. its so confusing!
quote from the dvla website: "The £19 fee is not payable if:
* you are using the existing registration document or certificate to notify changes * you are the new keeper of the vehicle and the previous keeper has failed to notify DVLA of the change. You must be in possession of the new keepers supplement (V5/2 or V5C/2) of the registration document or certificate and send this to DVLA with the V62 application form. You will receive the registration certificate within four weeks. However, please allow six weeks before making enquiries * the vehicle has been categorised as ‘C’ salvage by the insurance industry and they have destroyed the registration document or certificate (Categories A, B or D are not exempt from the fee. A = scrap only; B = break for spare parts only; C = repairable but repair costs exceeded vehicle value; D = repairable). DVLA will carry out checks to ensure that the vehicle criteria are met. Further information about the categorisation of vehicles is available from the insurance company. DVLA is unable to divulge this information"
i think i do need to pay since i don't have the original v5. golly...

I think you need to pay. The cars still registered in the previous owners name and you don't have the new keepers suppliment and its not a cat C.

Yes you'll need to pay. Without the new keepers supplement it's the £19. I did it a year or so back when we bought our curent Volvo 480, and I've just had to do it again for one we've been given.
Did he send the V5 to you, or to the DVLA? If he sent it Swansea (which he should have done), has it had enough time to be processed and come back to you?

The V5/2 or V5c/2 is the small green tear off slip at the bottom that you get. if you have one of them, then you shouldn't need to pay.
