Hello everyone, your thoughts if I may.  Ive dropped all the fuel lines and tank on my '81 Escort to replace all of the 30+ year old rubber fuel lines as a precaution. In total there is probably less than a metre of the rubber stuff, the rest is metal. I'm going to pop in to the local motor factor on the way home from work tommorrow to buy a metre and new clips but I've read quite a few people mentioning that the ethanol(sp?) in modern fuels is effecting replacement rubber fuel hose? What i'm getting at is,should I be looking for a new amazing wonder product Turbo 3000 fuel hose thats on the market that I don't know about? Don't want to do this then 300 miles down the road the new fuel pipe has been eaten away and the old girl goes up in flames!   Or am I just being over cautious?  Your thoughts genuinely appreciated! |

you will be fine , get injection pipe as its stronger to take high pressure etc,.

You want hose that is marked "R9". That's good for modern brews. Older "R6" seems ok too though not actually rated for ethanol.
In some countries there are laws about this, but not here, so any old tat is is unloaded on us. One sure sign of problems is fuel stink without any wet leaks, which indicate that the hose is permeable to some of the fuel components.

BTW "brand" alone is not enough. I've had issues with Gates branded (but no R number) hose recently. Stinks of fuel..... no actual leaks. Sniff the hose itself and it reeks.

My buddy had loads of probs with his 3.0 s capri,for ages, swapped dizzies, even got to the stage of putting new inlet manifold gaskets on, only by accident he had his nose by a fuel line one day. turned out the ethanol was killing his rubber fuel lines, rubber stunk of petrol, swapped the hoses for some uprated ones, and chucked in some millers (I think) booster which ups the octane rating and eases the rot,and it ran fine. bout time the petrol companies told the classic car world how much of this ethanol they are shoving in, and adjusted the price accordingly, paying top rate for shoddy fuel to be fair

Ethanol is massively corrosive to rubber, use it at work, nigh on like brake cleaner fluid, spray it on your hand, goes cold and evaporates taking your moisture with it

i used nylon hard lines(marine grade), and marine grade rubber.(bs7840)
