I'm legal to drive a car NOT owned by me, third party only.
But, does this (non owned) car need to be insured by it's owner?
A friend has asked me to move his car, he's working abroad, so the car hasn't been insured. Not worried about the tax, that's his problem!
Thanks

I have always believed that it does need to be insured by someone but I can't qualify that statement with anything. That wasn't a lot of help really was it?

Yes it does. My Dad knows someone who was prosecuted for driving without insurance while driving his girlfriends uninsured car on the "other cars" provision.

Every policy I've had says it has to be insured. Presumably to stop people insuring something cheap then driving around in their "friends" Skyline every day

Every policy I've had says it has to be insured My policy doesn't say this, just that I'm insured to drive a car not owned by me. Phone call to insurance company today......I'm sure that they'll know, possibly !

I can drive a car insured in someone elses name when the car isn't insured by the owner. You can with a lot of insurers it only recently some have started stating the car must be insured by the owner. Its your insurance covering it so. Its probably one of the factors the new tax laws came in to stop people using it as a loophole.

When I looked into this before, I could find no legislation that said it had to be insured elsewhere. That said, your own policy may only apply if the other car is insured by the owner - you'll need to check your policy.

it varies by company, check with your insurer and get something in writing from them if they say you can. That way, if you get stopped (as it'll go nuts on any ANPR) you can produce your insurance doc's plus writen confirmation from your insurer that you are fine

I have recently checked this with my own Insurance Co. and they will cover me to drive someone elses uninsured car only to the bare minimum of the requirements of 3rd party liability in the Road Traffic Act BUT this ONLY applies while the car is being driven (by me) and as has been said some companies specifically exclude this 'benefit'. Or get 24 hr cover .....
