my mate is installing a roll-cage, i understand u should really use supporting plates to spread the load of the rollcage feet where they bolt to the floor & where the rear cage feet bolt throught the arches, are these supporting plates to be welded inside or outside of the shell? cheers, he's having a battle at the mo haha ;D

inside if its being welded in, both sides if its being bolted in.

ive only ever put them on the inside of both types.
you need to use minimum 3mm thick steel with a minimum surface are off 120mm(sq)

I'm doing mine both sides just to be on the safe side. Not sure on thickness yet have been told by a fabricator friend that even 1/4" is more than enough.

my mate builds race cars for people for a living and he's seen loads come back squashed for repairs, he puts plates both sides so I'm going with him on this one, if your having cage might as well have one thats in over strong for the sake of a couple of hours extra work cutting out plates.

no plates needed on mine as its tied in directly to the chassis but i will be gusseting it to the floor and a pillars anyway  |

1/4" - !!!!!! 6+mm!  You cut up a sherman?  I've always done both sides too - never had an accident in one though -and not seen comparisons for welded or bolted in etc..... Anyone any idea on that one? |

1/4" - !!!!!! 6+mm! You cut up a sherman? I've always done both sides too - never had an accident in one though -and not seen comparisons for welded or bolted in etc..... Anyone any idea on that one? ;D I did get a funny look from the bloke when I mentioned the size. On another note can you make the metal in between the plates weak by sandwiching plates? Or is that not an issue. The metal in question is completely rust free btw and looks like it's just rolled off the line. |

again - not sure on that one - someone will know though - my wonder was always that welding in ( in theory ) weakens the metal immediately next to the weld....... but again - anyone actually got experience on any of this?
Question I'd always intended to ask but never got around to it!

MSA regs say 3mm thick by 120mm^2 for the main hoop (and 100mm^2 for the back stays i think.) Welded inside the car as thats the way the force will act on it if you roll the car. If you weld the plates on the outside then you only got the weld holding them.

if you don't put spreader plates under the feet if you put it on its roof the cage will punch through the shell. ive seen it happen a couple of times, i expect the last thing you want is CDS tube flying about the cabin!

i've also heard that the plates should be welded on the inside of the car, i was also looking at an older issue of retro cars mag where they put a cage in a car & they welded the plates on the inside to MSA regs but on the rear legs they used a spreader plate on the outside (in the wheelarch) to to act in the same fashion as washers really i suppose, but because of it being a single plate it spreads the load better than 3 large washers, i'll add the plates for the rear legs were welded in the car too! the car in question will be used on trackdays but mostly on the drag strip, cheers guys

I don't think anyone is discussing welding to the outside of the car along - but doing both having a plate one side and the other.

sorry thats what i meant the supporting/spreader plates welded to the inside, i've seen a few cars that use a MSA reg area size stainless plate on the outside only 1mm plate just as a spreader for the bolts, anyow the plates will be welded on the inside i think

thats what i meant really, he don't like doing bolted in cages as they take almost as long to fit and are not as strong, but when someone insists he will put plates on the outside to spread the load if the car goes over. the stuff he LIKES building is amazing, the cage pretty much becomes a chassis with the amount of work that goes into em and the standard of his welding i'd have him build my stuff if i could afford it.  www.classicrsfords.co.uk/retromotorsport.htm |
