For sale is a very tidy Peugeot 405 turbo diesel estate car that I originally bought to replace my BX estate. After a a visit to the Citroen rally in Harrogate this year I've decided to keep the BX as despite it's issues it's a little bit more quirky than the 405.
The 405 is in clean and tidy condition, has covered around 141,000 miles and has recently passed an MOT. There is around a months' tax remaining. It is evident that previous owners have looked after it which is reflected in the pictures. There are various little dings however, the odd minor rust spot etc. commensurate with age, but it is bright and clean for the year. I like the dark green metallic paint which was one of the reasons for buying it (the BX is white).
I have covered a couple of thousand miles and in that time I have serviced the engine with new oil, oil filer, fuel filter. The radiator has been replaced in the last year so I haven't changed the antifreeze. For the MOT the rest of it got a good once over including brake fluid change, a pair of rear cylinders and two brake pipes. The rear auto adjusters for the rear shoes had not been assembled correctly so I have stripped and cleaned these and checked they work. The hand brake cable could do with backing off a bit now as it's obviously been tweeked up a bit in the past in favour of sorting out the root cause.
The car comes with all of the hand books. When I purchased it, it was described as having full history, which I suppose is true. The service book is present but with hand written notes from previous owners rather than formal stamps. A lot of the service work was done at a garage called Windmill Motors though, including a cambelt in June 2009 at 125,000. A tow-bar is fitted that has received little use and I have had a spare number plate made up.
For information there are a couple of minor issues a buyer may wish to be aware of. The car is fitted with air-con which currently does not operate. I'm not going to say 'just needs a re-gas' as I don't know for sure, but would start with checking that. There's a slight rattle from the suspension from the n/s the front on bumps but I could not find any obvious problem and it passed the MOT without issue (possibly an anti roll-bar bush or similar available for a few pounds). There is 'clicker' behind the dash to make the indicators sound louder when they are on. This occasionally makes a noise when the indicators are off possibly due to a bit of wear in the stalk. there has been a new glow plug relay fitted but doesn't seem to stay on nearly as long as the BX so giving it a second turn gives a much cleaner start.
Right I think that's about it. It's a decent car that looks good and drives well. It should give good service for few years yet. For you vegetables out there it is fitted with the Lucas fuel system.
