Hi Guys I know economy isnt the first word i`d think of on RR but i need to sort my finances out (doesnt everyone) So need to clear my current fleet and get one cheap to buy and run car,(Less than £400 to spend : I`ve been thinking about a 1.5 diesel Peugeot 106 (cheap to buy good on fuel and cheap parts) Would this be a good car to look at or has anyone got any other ideas? Cheers Adrian

106's are good, I bought a 1.1 as a stopgap car whilst I repaired my LandRover but loved it that much i've replaced it my 96 with a 2001 106!
I can do about a million miles to no fuel whatsoever, small fuel consumption and no weight help that. Hammer it and its still 'quite' economical, my 1.1 does go well.....touches the limiter at about 73 in 3rd. Used to have a diesel 106 van for work which had the pump wound open, that used to fly and was brilliant on derv, it was always on its last legs with over 260,000miles so we ran it on whatever we had to hand at the time- veg oil, old engine oil etc
Defo worth looking into, also Saxo's share the same underpinnings but don't seem to wear as well.

I'd look at a ford Ka too, 45 MPG and parts are cheap and easy to get.

citroen zx diesels can be incredibly cheap to run, pick a one with a bosch pump and you can run it on chip fat as well,
rover 100 diesels can be cheap or you can buy a small petrol, and convert it to LPG

Lupo SDI, I picked one up for £580 so a bit more but factor in £30 road tax a year and you're laughing. It gets about 65+ mpg on a run. Tiny boot though

Kas seem to hold their money too strongly for my liking, well, ones with sills anyway . 106 is a good shout but the Dervs (unless you hunt them out) do now seem to command a premium over their petrol counterparts. I would also consider the 1.1 and 1.4 petrols . MkII Mondeos can't seem to be given away these days and generally are sturdy cars.

I was going to add 106 derv; looks like I'm well and truly beaten to it! If you want safety though, they're made of cardboard (like Paxos and AX's) and several people I know have had bad experiences in RTAs with them. ZX would be safer proposition I would imagine...

I've got a 106 1.5 satan fuel burner. It cost me £60 about 2 years ago and in that time has cost about another £50 in maintenance as it needed a driveshaft (£30) and a fuel cut off solenoid (£20). Does well over 50mpg.
However, it's crude, noisy and not very comfortable.
About the cheapest motoring going though.

Hi Thanks for the replys
I`ve had a Ka and they rot so badly, same with Rover 100s,
Quite like the idea of a Lupo but i think a 106 will be easier to find cheaply or maybe a Zx
Not to bothered about crash safety as its only for work and traffic goes at a snails pace

I bought my ZX for £470. Family owned from new, <60k, very well looked after. It does 47mpg, with me driving it like a loon most of the time, and it's not as slow as you'd think.
Parts are cheap (many shared with Saxo/Berlingo/AX/Xsara/C15). It's also big enough to drive on the motorway without being constantly in fear for your life, and has a fairly big boot.

Hi
Is the Zx a higher tax bracket than the 106 though??
Also thought about the Cuore but Daihatsu parts are harder to find and more expensive (well they are for my Hijet anyway)
Cheers Adrian

Daewoo Matiz. My Wife's had two, deceptively roomy, simple to fix, cheap parts, very cheap to insure and excellent on juice.

Rover Metro/100... get a 1.1 in good nick, keep the rear arms greased up and make sure the suspension is the right height and just drive. 50mpg average, cheap bits, good ride and handling, scrapyard interior upgrades cheap as, real beer money motoring.

If you don't mind me asking, what cars do you currently own that u'd be getting rid of? The reason I ask is it would be ideal to gauge where your coming from in terms of spec to what you'd be going to!
I'd say first off tho a 1.9 306 diesel (no turbo if you can find one) They keep going and going with minimal maintenence and low priced available parts, cheap to buy and run 50mpg+. Insurance is very reasonable compared to other cars. Only downsides really are the higher tax band being a 1.9 and it's not fast at all (although not as slow as you'd expect)
