Quite fancy getting a bit of Dirty DERV biodiesel/veg oil retro action going in something big and luxury, seeing as I will be doing 80 miles a day round trip for the new job.
Needs to handle "ok", be comfy on the motorway, and give me somewhere to settle into if the motorway is busy after an 8 hour day at a desk. Saab never made diesel models before the 9-3/vectralike. Skoda Felicia Dervs are small engined and non-turbo. Not sure if I fancy a pug derv. What else can I have? BMWs are out unfortunatley as missus thinks they have "Scary faces" and as a Skoda driver I couldn't stand the image stigma of driving a BM? What am I looking at? Volvo/Audi/Merc any other suggestions for a late 80's to early/mid 90's DERV monster, either big lump or turbo diesel.

citroen CX turbo 2 would be my choice - 2.4 turbo diesel, pretty nippy, will do 40mpg, and they look like space ships J

Hmm nice. How common though? Am I likely to find one suitable for a daily driver, or am I going to instantly want to make it shiney and stick it away in a museum to drool over and only drive on dry days?

I waiting till I'm at the desk, I will have another years ticket on the current motor to flog it, and a couple of months in to make sure that I have the right job and the money in the bank. That Alfa would have been nice though.
I had thought 760 TD but how common where they in Saloon(cheaper) form? Merc is good. Simple old and GSF parts. I'm not sure about french cars generally, but the weird big spaceship Cits do tickle the right bits though.

The great thing about the Ovlov is that they were invariably driven by (ahem) elderly owners so have led a gentle life. How easy one would be to locate now is anyone's guess. I've driven one, if I remember it was a six-cylinder and oh so comfortable.

'THE MOON ON A STICK'.
A Mercedes is pretty much the only thing that will be happy with 18k +++ a year without (a) being ruinious in repairs and (b) fizzling away to a pile of mush after a winter of motorway grind.
Don't expect it to be much fun though. Unless woefully sluggish 'beirut taxis' with a steeringwheel the size of luxembourg is your 'bag'.

Thanks. I did look at the 760 and 740 TD models online. Inevitabley most are wagons not saloons, but it looks like the 760 with the intercooler will be more entertaining than the lower powered non IC 740.
I think it might be fun too, because diesel tuning is getting more and more popular, biodiesel and veg oil fuels are interesting, and I've never owned a DERV before even though I passed my test in a Punto diesel.

How on earth would you hop-up a 20+ year old chugga? I do not know. I agree that making your own fuel would be quite satisfying mind. I must try it sometime.

[whisper mode]Omega 2.5TD - 6 pot 150bhp taxi drivers love em - nice and strong - cheap as chips due to taxi driver image[/whisper mode]
The above was written in an alcohol induced haze as I personally don't like omegas but that oil burning one makes a lot of sense when you hate the car it's fitted to

We used to have a Carlton 2.3TD at work. It was great on the motorway but a bit curse word elsewhere. The power band was about 1500 revs and it would need a 10-speed box to keep it on the boil. Wet roundabouts when the boost came in were a laugh though.

Perhaps I shouldn't risk another 5000! ;D I'd go for Big Merc. There's a 300D that'll be up for grabs next year if you can cope with something that isn't too old.
