Thay turn up from time to time in local trade yards that have been taken in P/X. I got my old one this way, and tuk some finding Prices range from £200 for something resonabul, to £2500 for a minter with FSH. M535s tend to be between £500 for a ruff one, to £3500 And the propper 24v M5 ranges from around £5000-10,000 depending on cond', sometimes even more if really good! Good luck in your quest, it'll be worth the wait- I wish i'd never got rid of mine What model are you lucking for?

Its going to be our daily, so i think it'll have to be a 520i if we can find one. I don't know enough about the earlier ones to make a definate choice - it might just be what comes up first ! No M5's though sadly.

I nearly bought a 1987 520i at an auction years ago, should have snapped it up really.

magnumpi on here had a 528i that was v. cheap. before everyone shouts "M353i", 528is a great understudy. vastly cheaper, better on fuel and smoother running. 525e is a hoot round town, suprisingly spritely for an "economy" model. all autos tho, manual conversion and 325i head would make a cracking little sleeper. 520is are ok, thirsty for a 2.0 as you have to work them because of the weight. 518i's are a god send to work on, loads of room. also use my favourite engine, the bulletproof m10. not a bad car, less lard and short ratios means it not painful to use. 528i's and 535i's had semi camber compensating rear suspension arms, to prevent the positive camber induced under hard cornering, and consequently scary and not particularily controlable oversteer. spin, spin, spin! 528i, 518i (so long as you don't think it'll take on the world) and 525e are my pick of the pops

Some great advice there, and I'd agree with all of it. I've had four E28s, ranging from £80 to over a grand, I've also found that price isn't indicative of condition... There's plenty around, the mechanical side of things is pretty straightforward, but electrics can prove troublesome... If you end up finding something, put it up here and I'm sure we can answer some questions. I'd spend about £800 on a well specced, solid 528i or 525e and you won't go wrong. Here's my M5 motored 528i... Just because I'm a tart. ;D

Hey Bryn, that looks great! If my Sapph' Ghia goes shortly, I'm going to have to get B&D to source me an E28. (My wife has put her foot down and said that I'm not allowed a Jag XJ40, or a W123 Merc, so I figured if I didn't ask about E28s, she couldn't say no...)

Thanks dude, it came off the road at the start of December for a spray job and tidy up. Then it'll more than likely be for sale next summer if my intended world domination plan comes off... (I'm leaving the country ;D)
You're best off not asking her anyway, the only way I could describe it to a friend was to say it's what middle management and headmasters drove in the 80s, drug dealers in the 90s and me now.

A couple I've seen locally. They always look so right to me. Bottom one was a 525e, looked OK underneath the grime. Ah, just remembered this one I saw in the flesh which is for sale on the jalopies website..... There's a couple for sale over here, although the boat fare will cost you another £300 return at least :s this one:Or there's an M5, has been for sale in the local paper for a couple of months now at least.. No pic sadly, but: Tempted on the 520 meself, got a complete E34 535i spare, would make a decent transplant I think! Shame I've not got anywhere to put it (usual story!)

Tempted on the 520 meself, got a complete E34 535i spare, would make a decent transplant I think! you'll need the e28 sump, oil pump, mounts and wiring (although they will run on 4 wires ) and the cooling layout is differnet (e28 is better laid out). e34 535i manual 'box is the same as an e28 m5, should take plenty of punishment. e28 runs flywheel pickups for its motronic, best to splice the e34 loom and use the e34 front crank sensor setup. better think about some vented discs up front if you go for it, lol! I'll continue threatening to "do" one for some years to come. to subject at hand, laserchrom often have a few good ones in check here edit- lasrchrom have the "exotic" ones in at the mo, although it'd be worth an ask in case they know of any "lesser" models that might be up for grabs

Damn, didn't realise they were that different! Might as well donate the M30 lump to a E30 shell instead when I find a clean cheap one! [/thread hijack over lol]

The E28 I had was a 1986 520i Auto. Mine came with front vented disks, solid rear disks (H/B shoes in hub) and front and rear ARBs, I always thought that the 528i and higher models came with these bits- or did autos come with them to? I always hoped mine was ordered with the Sport Spec suspension
