I'm going to look at an MG metro Tommorow and haven't got a clue what to look out for. The ad describes it as a one owner mint condition '85 car, with 42,000 on the clock and MOT'ed till aug next year. Its being sold on behalf of an old fella who's giving up driving. The asking price is £450.is this about right? Oh and it's green ;D

Sills, floors, wheelarches, wings, doors, tailgate....
Engine should feel lively, MG and VDP Metro's had 75bhp, check it for oil leaks (they almost always leak some), blue smoke on hard acceleration and when you lift off, make sure it changes gear without crunching both up and down the box in every gear.
Have a look at it on some level ground, make sure it sits evenly from side to side- if it doesnt then the Hydragas (or HydraSag) suspension will need sorting.
Check the type/condition of the tyres- some MG Metro's had Michelin TRX tyres which are an odd metric size and not cheap...even if you plan on replacing the rims with something meatier you can use that as a bargaining point.
They were a better car than anyone gives them credit for, and now very rare...most of them got binned and their engines put into Minis. Mechanical bits as you would imagine are dead cheap, trim and stuff less so.
And if it's green then it's probably Opaline Green Metallic which suited them IMHO.
Good luck!!

I thought you meant the spam tins reminded you of her legs.... bionic aunt!
Anyway back to the point - it's been ages since I've seen an MG Metro! One of those cars that was in good supply 3-4 years ago then just vanished. Can't think I've ever seen one in green either so must be something special.

Did anyone mention to look for rust?! :-)
Nice cars but as mentioned, far too many have gone the way of the Mini enthusiast. If it's solid, 'ave it!

The very last Rover 100s are on hydragas, thats why so many look like they`ve been jacked up at the back and lowered at the front. I would think MG Metros are on the same, you might be able to get a pump quite cheap, not that many garages have much use for one these days and to be honest the last time I saw one it looked like an old biscuit tin I really couldnt imagine it changing hands for big money.

All Metros/100s run Hydragas. The difference is that A series ones are linked side to side and K series ones are front to rear. Different to pretty much anything else out there (apart from other BL products) but not scary and easy to pump up if you find someone with a pump.

Twinspark, Alfas don't rust though do they? I nearly bought a 33 once, lovely little cars! it was almost as rusty as my Maestro though ;D The Metty, yeah, they do rust, but no worse than some other contemporary small cars of their time. Dazmax, did you end up buying the wee beastie then?

Depends which Alfa it is, especially true with the 33. S1 and S2 cars were largely unprotected - the S3 cars were galvanised so were much better protected than a contemporary Escort / Astra etc.
My 75 isn't too bad for something that old that has been used as a daily driver in all weathers for the last few years.
Anyway, yes, the Metro wasn't really any worse than the Fiesta and Nova.
But I'd have said the same thing about those, too.
