Hi bortaf! There's a quite a gap between W123 and W124. I know why I'm currently getting rid of all my W123 spares... This car has me fully convinced of W124s. And I've just placed an order for some spare parts for a rear suspension rebuild. First I planed to just repair what's broken - but looking at the rear suspension it's virtually any rubber that needs replacing... They'r all more or less torn apart. No wonder after about 350kkm they have done right now. The ride is getting increasingly "twitchy". And this is where the W123 has a huge avantage: it's built much simpler. A simple semi-trailing arm rear suspension which hardly ever wears out - and if it does it's just 5 rubber bushes and it's like new. The W124 multi-link axle is more of a pig to rebuild and needs a complete tracking done afterwards... But the difference in ride, handling and tractability makes it worthwhile So the next 2 big projects on this car are: - installing 4x factory electric windows -- +Taxi center console - rear suspension rebuild I'm currently collecting all the parts needed. And will try to make it all in one go. Resp. remove the rear suspension, treat the bodywork where neccesary and also dismantle the interior. And install the power windows whilst also installing the Taxi center console. And when this is done, I'm bringing back the Mini for it's much needed big overhaul. Well that's my cunning plan anyway. You know how it is with making big plans Cheers, Jan

Interessting but useless fact; there are two versions of the Taxi reading light. The later has a ribbed ring and an additional catch at the rear, the earlyer version is flat and without the additional catch. I guess it was intruduced in mid-'87 when the flip-astray and other very smal changes were introduced as standard. Needless to say I changed for the ribbed spot light as it's much more handy to use. It's from the now gone Berlin Taxi, btw. Cheers, Jan

And today the car received a good old fashioned hand wash The hard work waxing it last summer payed out - all it needed was a quick once over with water, leathering dry and re-polish with a microfibre cloth You would not believe how black the water in the bucket was Feels like spring is approaching fast. Er - no, actually spring never left And only 4000km to go untill the next oil change. Cheers, Jan

I've just tiped a big road trip report thingy, the forum software swallowed it - so here's the short version: I bought this: To help with the rear suspension renewal. Gah. Not going to type that again. End of story. It's spring! Cheers, Jan

Ok, next try. I collected this in the middle of the deepest Black Forrest - 'cause, you all know - buying tools to work on cars is the next best thing to buying cars to work on with tools And since I'm not going to buy any car any time soon - I bought me this tool. Which just like a car has four rubber wheels with ball bearings. And since the shortest distance between two pints is a curvy back road - I took the direct way to pick it up. Which was across the Black Forrest on some VERY twisty, very smal roads. And then I had to stop to step (and pee ) on actual, natural occuring SNOW for the first time this winter. And as you can see, the fun taking this route was a little spoiled by my attachement - the trailer. It was a very enjoyable trip nevertheless - the engine is totaler wansinn for towing heavy loads - the low end grunt helps on hills. Since I didn't trust my skills in strapping down heavy loads, I took it slowly on the way back - and took a prolonged break to enjoy a very warm, very blue and very spring-ish day - and this panoramic view: It was only 60km one way - still it took me 4 hours One hand for the steering wheel, one hand for the coke can, one eye for the road ahead and one eye on the trailer in the rear view mirror. And one hand for the camera, of course The car behaved flawless, all went good - but I realy don't want to know the actuall fuel consumption of that day Which was offset by the fact I only payed 45€ for that thing - a bargain! I don't know how old it is, but I guess at least 40-50 years. It's a bit leaky - but still working well. But since it's rated for only 500kg lifting capability, I may sell it on after I did the rear suspension. Cheers, Jan

And the obligatory "look-how-much-I-can-spend-on-parts" shot; This all will go to the rear suspension - busy day of work ahead! An then I made a little potato-chop on the center console. Don't know yet how to paint it, but I think I prefere it all brown with only the smal plastic covers left black... I'll paint this as soon as it gets a bit warmer. Cheers, Jan

Continuing with the Taxi stuff, I today cleaned the Taxi center console and gave it a new colour. I used the stuff from FGS Lederfarben. It was not cheap, but works very well. and I'm high like a bird right now One spary can was hardly enough, I fully emptied it on this. The colour is very thin and needs many thin coats for full colouring. And the first layer seems to "soak" into the vinyl. I've made a little scratch test with my finger nail in a later invisible area - it seems to stick very well! So start with a dismantled black Taxi center console: Lick of paint here & there... And ned up with a brown Taxi center console a few minutes later Cheers, Jan

Looking good Jan! Rear suspension looks interesting, hope you do a full report as usual!
Want to do all that on mine too, how similar in setup are the W124 and W126?

Hi onne! Thanks! Yes, will of course do a complete write up W126 has the old semi-trailing arm rear suspension, same as found on /8, W116 and W123, the 190 and W124 were the frist to get a multi-link rear suspension. W126 rear suspension rebuild is pretty cheap & easy in comparison 4 trailing arm bushes, 3 rubber mounts - done Plus maybe wheel bearings & shock absorbers & sway bar links. That's the beauty of the last "classic" Mercedes And it also doesn't require a full wheel alignment after the rebuild... The W124 has a refined handling - but it comes with a price The links alone are 220€. I could have bought the bushes and re-bush the old links - but... Gah. Stupid amount of work due to stupid amounts of bushes I think I've spent 350-400€ in parts alone for the rear suspension, and it'll need an alignement afterwards which will probably be in the region of 80-90€. But it's totaly worth it - a sound rear suspension on these is incredibly awesome! It does a huge deal to the handling and ride quality of a W124. If you ever drove one with a good, unworn rear suspension - you'll be wanting to spend that money ASAP Oh and I was able to capture this very rare moment today: Allready the second fill this month! Jeez... I need to get me a big 90l fuel tank... Cheers, Jan

Super, I'll get some of those ordered then! I've done the sway bar links a year or so ago so I would dearly hope they are still ok!
Just need to sort the creaking door cards... Any suggestions? (Apologies for the hijack. Again!)

Today I spontaneously drove into the outskirts of the Black Forrest again - due to a car listed on eBay. Namely a '87 or '88 series one W124 coupé with 62.000km on the clock. It was a sunny, warm day - but still, what was awaiting us was very sad. I thought "yeah, 62k my ärse!!". But - the milage is genuine. It it wasn't so dirty, it would be a car in brand new-ish condition. NO rust anywhere, no wear - no accident - nothing. And still it is being broken for parts. And there's no way to legaly return it to the road ever again. neither was it involved in drug trafficing, murder or a robbery. It's a victim of the scrappage sheme. Which is a utter blöödy crying shame that is!!! Excuse the words, but some people are dümb as sh!t!! So we continued the dirty buiseness and gutted it out. The guy knew what the parts are worth, but we still got good prices - but I mainly came for the genuine MB roof rack: Also took a perfectly working driver's mirror (30€ - new they cost 500!!)... ...and FINALY after a month long search this car had the wiring loom I was hunting for: The one to the left is a series 1 loom, the one on the right is a pot-facelift series 2 loom. And what does it do? It switches power back on for the electric windows. If ignition is turned off and the door opened. So you don't have to put the key back in if you forgott to close the windows. It's purely a comfort thing, but I want to have it. This was the last missing piece for the elctric window conversion I could have taken so much more with me - but it was too sad to do. And I'd rather save my funds instead of throwing them at parts that I don't realy need. And if I need them - it's not like good used parts are mega-rare. I got a hand full of usefull bits - that's enough. And the roof rack has made this car 100% more practical That's it for now. Cheers, Jan

Your Depth of knowledge is truly staggering (wire looms and keeping power when door open etc!). Do you recite a workshop manual and part numbers:-)

I basically have two operating modes when it comes to cars: ignorance and full-on-nerd I once owned a B3 Passat and I could not care less about anything about it The other thing is that I earn my money with working on W123s and W124s. So one thing sort of leads to another.

Argh - getting the tyres on turned out to be quite a mission... Up in the air for the third time... This time at my former boss's. However - no luck. This time we had 16" pump rings - but still no chance. Still too much air escaping. So a quick call to the next tyre fitter - they had time and a tyre bomb. So we mounted the tyres on the wheels and loaded them in the trunk of the trusty Dacia and off I went. Tyres were shot on the rims - two had to be shot twice - WTF!? I don't know why, but thos Michelin tyres are stubborn as fück!! Though they finally were on the tyre, I loaded them and drove back. Quick alancing and all was good. And I think the 205/55s are much better looking than the 225/55s - just as I expected Finally! Cheers, Jan

Continuing my monoloque... Today was mirror-day. First discovery: wood screws Second, as expected: broken mechanismn. Water gets in, the joints corrode, seize and then the die cast breaks. So I put on the 62kkm mirror on I bought last week; fits like a glove and looks like new inside. Not a slight hint of corrosion. I conserved it with weapons oil, greased the joints and on it went. Another first; a mirror that can be adjusted with just two fingers And whilst I was at it, I also investigated the passenger's side mirror. Which is electric. The cardanic joint was broken... I you look closely, you can see that the unbroken glas is also heated. It's from the TDT engine donor and matches the Coupé's glas. Glas gets warm - everything's working. So not only did I repair it, I also upgraded to heated glas. Which is easy, as the electrics are allready present But the housing is broken as well and tilts too much towards the front... Sooner or later I'll be needing a new mirror. And I honestly don't know why I didn't grab this one from the 62k Coupé as well... Cheers, Jan

Oh, and with the narrower tyres, I'm starting to like the R129 hub caps a lot! A diesel can't wear fancy alloys, can it?
