To summarise the next update: --> Not happy. Not happy at all. Had a go at gluing the right rear trim. If you read a few pages back, the car came with a black one and I bought a second brown interior with door cards for electric windows etc. Anyway. The rear linings are glued rubber-ish material on pressed hard card board. The skin shrinks with time and lifts off. Since it's a tight corner, I couldn't get the material back to the card - heat made it shrink even more. So I cut it a little in the later to be coveread area. And of course it ripped and left me with this: FCUK!!! I cut off some excess material from the bottom and glued that it. From a distance it's OK-ish to look at. At least. I'm not sitting in the rear either - but what a bummer! I'm certainly not going to re-glue the other side! Only problem is that it sort of brakes the inserts plastic clips when it shrinks too much. And worst of all; the glue started to lift again in that corner. Wrong glue, still too much stretch - I don't know. I don't want to know. I want to forgett it right now. Fück. At least it's one step forward to electric windows. But I'm not very happsy about it - I should have left it alone. Sigh. It'll be a while untill I can find another one. And if I do, I'll probably have to buy a third interior with it. Booo! Cheers, Jan

I have just read this thread beginning to end in one go! Its a great read and very interesting, much better than reading a novel. There have been so many ups and downs and twists in the plot. Its great to see someone really enjoying their car and making it 'just so' as they know its a keeper. Its just such a shame to end on a slightly negative turn, I really felt it when I saw the tear in the door card. That 'should have left it alone' feeling isn't nice, been there plenty of times. Don't dwell on it though the electric windows are gonna be an ace upgrade.
I quite like these old Mercedes generally but there is something special about this one, it just seems to gel together so nicely. The pillar-less coupe shape, the two tone gold/bronze outside and the dark brown leather inside all wafted along by a powerful but relaxed engine is a superb combination. I look forward following your project as it develops.

Hi Steve! Thanks a lot for the nice words It's always good to hear that others enjoy this car as well, albeit just from my babbling & pictures I know exactely what you mean about this one. When I arrived at the parking lot where I bought it - I knew I would buy this, no matter what's wrong with it. And when I took it for it's first drive, back home - I was happy. Knowing it'll eat me alive, cost me lots of sweat, money and tears. And I looked forward to this, grining, and depressed the accelerator pedal further Yes - it's a keeper. That's for sure! Cheers, Jan

Happy new year to all of you! and new year - no more SRS warning light madness. The last 3-400 miles I drove with somtjing stoffed in front of the instrument cluster. As the SRS warning light started to go mad when driving in a straight line. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't bright "in your face" red. I hate red warning lights. anyway. i had to jiggle the steering wheel to turn it off for a minute - untill it went on again. Yesterday evening I removed the steering wheel and throughly cleaned the contact ring & contacts. And what to say? So far it stayed off for the last 250km Flashing warning lights realy acompany me with this car Since now the ABS warning light occasionally comes on too. But that's a broken sensor - no big job. And speaking of kilometers: It's less then half a year ince the conversion. Then the speedo showed 535.300km. Today it showed 547.400km. That's 12.000km without any serious trouble or breakdown. Looking forward to the next 25.000km which I'll probably do this year. The engine has now done ~245.000km. The car ~350-360.000km and the gearbox the indicated 547.000km. This year's plans: - intercooling - new generator - electric windows - Taxi center console - sheduled and unsheduled maintainance In other news: firworks hit the front screen. I have not yet examined if damage has occured to prevent myself from puking...

In other news: firworks hit the front screen. I have not yet examined if damage has occured to prevent myself from puking... Took 15 minutes of rubbing & soaking with aggresive cleaners and a sponge - there are burn marks left in the glas where it melted a bit. Though they'r so smal I can't even photograph them. Maybe that's a good excuse for a new windscreen this year, the old one is well worn and "sand blasted" and has lots of microscopic stone chips. And I bought another set of 16" steels - this time 7x16" ET33 from a 2008 W211 E-Class. A steal at 20€: They will be about 10mm smaler and TÜV accepts them with 205/55 tyres - of which there are plenty available & cheap. 225/50 is just too expensive. On the 8x16" steels are 225/55 - TÜV said no to these anyway. I'd need 215/55 or 225/50 - both are more expensive than the 205/55. So 205/55 on 7x16" it is. Only need to find a set of W211 center caps For now I'm back on std. 15" alloys and 195 winter tyres. The R129 wheels & 225/55 tyres are just too big, TÜV said no and they rub. Meh. Cheers, Jan

I've just read up on the last couple of updates and it is still a very nice car that is getting al the love it could possibly need! Great story, very enjoyable!

And now it gets even more love! Today i finally replaced the ABS sensors on the front. I had this little, annoying problem that shrtly before standstill, the ABS kicked in like mad, and occasionally when driving slowly, the ASD also kicked in. Which made driving and especially braking quite uncomfortable. And under hard braking or when I hit a bump, from time to time the ABS warning light came on. A quick measuremrnt showed that the resistance readings of both front sensors were within specification. But: voltage readings were - weird. So I replaced the sensors today. With the pair I had left from the engine donor - they'r only 535.000km old after all And then I took it for a spin on some muddy dirt roads... ...and what to say: ABS and ASD are working as intended! Flawless and perfectly. Awesome! I'll see how long the sensors last - for now they do the job just fine Cheers, Jan

Looking forward to seeing the new steelies on. Are they staying silver? Donor cars are great. Its the smug feeling from being able to fix stuff for free.

Hi! Yes, they will stay silver. Though probably a different shade of silver. And I'm in the middle of deciding wheter to buy M12 bolts with M14 head (wheels are made for M14, though M12 fits just fine), as this would enable me to put on the E-Class center caps: Which apparently don't fit/hold with M12 bolts. I guess I'll see as son as I have some Silver steels Salesman-leasing-look FTW

Looking good Jan, knew you´d get it sorted mate. What´s the score with the right hand front wing, is it staying that way?

How the Heck do you find a set of steels for 20 Euro?? Great Find
Are they 5 x 112?

Hi Dave! The wing will receive paint, as soon as I can leave the car for a moment at the painter's. And when it's a little warmer My painter is a few km away and needs the car for some days to take the colour (as a "inbetween job" for fewer consumption of funds). After my experience with the rattle can paint I'd rather leave it to the hands of a professional - and this painter I know. And he does a very good job. We bring all our customer's cars there. For the moment I'm not too fussed about the wing - it's on the passenger's side, I rarely see it anyway Cheers, Jan

How the Heck do you find a set of steels for 20 Euro?? Great Find Are they 5 x 112? ...and just 60km away EBay, January 1st when half the country is still in alcohol induced coma Ok, with fuel they cost me 35€... The are 5x112 but drilled for M14 bolts, I have M12 bolts. M12 bolts fit OK, but I think I'll buy M12 bolts with M14 heads (M12 R14), they ave wider heads and can hold the center caps pictured earlyer. Cheers, Jan

We had a meet of the diesel-fleet today Though it's still two OM60X powered cars short... OM601/190D - OM602/250TD - OM603/300TD - OM603/300D - OM603a/300CD Turbo Which adds up to 13.5l cubic capacity, 27 cylinders and 535HP. Combined milage is just shy of 2 million kilometers Cheers, Jan

I really want to 606 turbo one of these with mechanical pump....
Do you know anyone who's put in the Musso engine?

No. But I'd rather take th direct injection 2.9 OM602 from the W210. Because it's plenty strong and has an totaly awesome diesel-noise In fact - if I had found a good & cheap donor car in time, this would now be the engine in this car Or maybe I'd still fight with wiring looms The Musso engine is again indirect injection IIRC. i mean - listen to it!

The Musso engine is very tempting too, especially due to cheapness. OM603 turbo pumps seem hard to get (to convert OM606 to Mechanical) but I've heard that the OM662 or OM602 2.9 can suffer with head gasket issues.
The OM605 20v from a C250td with the mechanical pump from a Musso might be on to a winner though? 20v efficiency & power, the Musso pump should be able to make a decent attempt at fuelling it and the thing should run with just a few wires - am I wrong? 5 cylinder noise too!
I believe the OM605/606 is do-able with alot of wiring trickery but the ECU is a massive ballache. I'd rather sacrifice a couple of MPG for simplicity!

605/606 - I just don't like them. They need revs to work, they have a nasty plastic fuel system and we had countless heads that had to be removed and sent away for a glow plug change at the machine shop They make big power with a few mods, no doubt. But if power kicks in at 5000RPM it just doesn't do it for me. I want a cruiser, not a race car. All reasons why I opted for the 2 valve engine(s). Musso engines are not realy cheap 8whre I am at least), a rotten W210 with OM606 Turbo is the same price, if not less with a bit of luck. As far as I observed. The only reason I'd go for a direct injection 2.9 is a) it makes a nice sound and b) is an interesting step in engine development and c) it pulls like an ox from down below whilst being very economical - which can't be sad for the OM606 - due to it's revy nature. I'm not after top-power but easy driveability - the OM603 turbo, for me!, wins by a mile Fo the ECU side of the DI 2.9 - there's a neat trick to make it all work without much fuss 606/W210 is more cimplicated, that's true...

You'll have to fill me in on the neat trick Does it work for the OM605's as well? Do the 606's need to be revved? 330Nm torque @ 1600rpm suggests not!?! E290TD wasn't released in Ireland/UK as far as I know so would be a bit of effort to source one. Attraction of the OM606 is the potential power and ability to cruise

It's my impression, at least I'm not sure the neat trick works for 605s as well, as the 602 DI has a distributor pump, no inline pump. Grabbing a test drive would probably solve all mysteries PM on it's way... Cheers, Jan
