A glovebox damper! Thats seriously PIMP. I love that brown interior, very nice. Thanks! The colours were one reason to buy the car. No - that's not true, actually. They were THE reason I bought the car ----------- And speaking of buying... Today we had 17 self-igniting cylinders with 8.5l capacity together, producing 346 smoking horses -> E's bought a 300D from 9/'85 - a very early example. But; it had to be towed in and for that we used a working horse; a 250TD. I arrived at the site with my 300CD - making the 17 horses complete. Speaking of complete; the car was missing a essential part of any rear wheel driven car... The vibration damper had desintegrated. The reason the car was sold. Slight damage to the flanges, but we though we give it a try. Prop shaft was in the boot. So put that back to where it belongs. And: roll-out... Jepp - it's moving. And there she is; a senior citizen's dream; dull grey on the outside and dull grey cloth inside, covered in dull grey fur seat covers. Awesome!! Given it's age and the miles it's done (375kkm), it has VERY few rust and everything has been maintained well. It's in fantastic condition - but there are hints of it's age, of course. But nothing too dramatic. Bit of FluidFilm and she's good to go. I shouted first dibs on this car immediately. If I had had the space and cash for it - I'd bought it in a heartbeat! It's a lovely car. And it makes MUCH bigger clouds of black smokes than mine does Maybe it need a tweak here and there... Cheers, Jan

Yes! And there are so many little differences to later years... And downright amazing stuff like a vented generator; the engineers probably feared underbonnet temps would climb too much with the encapsulated engine bay (a novum for diesel cars, to reduce noise): ^and I've always wonered what that hole in the wishbone's console is good for (later cars still have it)... Another detail of a very early W124; the totaly impractical, 'reversed' fuse box:

Two other short notices: I've done a crazy 8000km since TÜV in August. And the oil level light went on today for the first time... I guess 40% of the oil has disappeared through said warning light's sensor and a insufficiently tightened drain plug - whoops! No drips on the floor thanks to full engine capsulation - modern car feature! Didn't notice And; the ASD error light is flashing again. And I'm going to go §OÖ%&Ü>#?$!&$'# pretty shortly! Last resort: brake light switch (two stage switch, brake lights work but could still be faulty). However, there's one problem: there's a lot of air in the feed line - and I can't realy locate where it's coming from right now. The pre-filter is almost sucked dry by the lift pump at mid revs! I've allready tightend all hose clamps down - still. I'll investigate tomorrow. And this little fella confused the "broken lamp detection computer" into thinking a bulb is broken. Took me a while to find it, as it was still as bright as a undamaged bulb So long, Jan

Wasn't my fault, 'cause this would be totaly emberassing On the bright side, lots of grunt has been gained Cheers, Jan

And as things happen; I got what I wanted to build - for free Albeit in a "quite a bit" shabby configuration... But I can use the divider piece and weld it to the bottle jack and use the chinese pop-tester's reservoir as a filler neck The crappy chinese manometer goes into the bin - the other one is a high quality piece and has a high accuracy spec - wasn't the cheapest. The manometer is the mother of any pop-tester - the rest is just very crude, basic hydraulics... Cheers, Jan

This is only a wheely smal update... Since - there's nothing to report. I changed the brake light switch and the ASD light stayed off for over a week now - that's a new record! Apart from that; i spent the day in the car today, getting some stuff. Showing it's colourfull side on the Autobahn... My trip brought me to the beautifull, ancient town of Staufenberg. Where I collected these: Genuine 8x16" steels for R129 SLs. With almost unworn 225/55 winter tyres. Yeah! 225 winter tyres! Oh, and 16" W140 hub caps... Cheers, Jan

Thanks! I like the wider look as well. Though it seems it's some sort of secret activation beacon for the boy racer brigade... Anyway. I'm currently looking for some paper stuff and then I'll get them aproved by the TÜV - I think it can stay like this. And I I need to make a long trip where economy is important I can still use the 195s... another thing I noted with those 225s: no more wheel spin in 1st on wet roads And even my boss gave his approval. In other news; I bought a cheap volleyball gauge which reads up to 1.4 bar / 20psi - which is the perfect range for an accurate boost gauge Speaking of boost; those engines make up to 14 psi in stock form! Which is quite a bit more than I expected.

many old mechanical diesels I have noticed run 1 bar std, all the 1.9 XUD's do so.
